There have even been mechanical rear projection sets, looking through a looking glass/binoculars at the projected image. So rear projection goes back about a decade earlier than this unit. In the 30s Philips made plenty of small 'projection CRTs/tubes' used in Schmidt Optik rear projection units sold in the US.

The videojukebox set-ups op the early forties used film?

I am sure there are older sets in the UK than this one, definitly older mechanical television sets.

Looks like it might have been left in a sunny area of a room. If you look there is a huge difference in color between the inside of the door than is hanging down and the bottom of the set. That is usually a sign that some UV got to it. A lot of old stains will fade when exposed to UV especially from sunlight, but I have had it happen to me to a lesser degree on antique tables with CFL lights (which also emit UV in small amounts) on them.
