Avatar (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) [Blu-ray] (2009)
James Cameron's Oscar and Golden Globe winning highest grossing picture of all time is headed for high-definition in April!
The mega hit 'Avatar' starring Sam Worthington and Sigourney Weaver is coming to DVD and Blu-ray on Earth Day (April 22).
According to a statement by Avatar producer Jon Landau in the Los Angeles Times, this will be a bare-bones BD/DVD combo release as "we wanted to do something really special and reach for the best presentation of any film in the history of the format. Everything that is put on a disc takes up room – the menus, the extras, the trailers and studio promotions – and we got rid of all of that so we could give this movie the best picture and sound possible."
However, those who salivate over supplements can expect a multi-disc "Ultimate Edition" double dip in November, and more details on that will be revealed on March 23 at a press release with Landau and Cameron.
Cameron also stated a value added DVD and 3D Blu-ray should be released just in time for the holidays.
Specs, supplements, and suggested list price haven't been revealed yet.
Plot Synopsis:
Avatar takes us to a spectacular world beyond imagination, where a newcomer from Earth embarks on an epic adventure, ultimately fighting to save the alien world he has learned to call home.
We enter the alien world through the eyes of Jake Sully, a former Marine confined to a wheelchair. But despite his broken body, Jake is still a warrior at heart. He is recruited to travel light years to the human outpost on Pandora, where a corporate consortium is mining a rare mineral that is the key to solving Earth's energy crisis. Because Pandora's atmosphere is toxic, they have created the Avatar Program, in which human "drivers" have their consciousness linked to an avatar, a remotely-controlled biological body that can survive in the lethal air. These avatars are genetically engineered hybrids of human DNA mixed with DNA from the natives of Pandora... the Na'vi.
Reborn in his avatar form, Jake can walk again. He is given a mission to infiltrate the Na'vi, who have become a major obstacle to mining the precious ore. But a beautiful Na'vi female, Neytiri, saves Jake's life, and this changes everything. Jake is taken in by her clan, and learns to become one of them, which involves many tests and adventures. As Jake's relationship with his reluctant teacher Neytiri deepens, he learns to respect the Na'vi way and finally takes his place among them. Soon he will face the ultimate test as he leads them in an epic battle that will decide the fate of an entire world.

Yeah, that really surprises me... Very short for the blockbuster. It's actually been in theaters since December 20th, so that's right at four months. I suppose they're trying to capitalize on the buzz that still exists instead of waiting a month or two and competing with all the summer activities.

Cameron has always been a big supporter of the DVD(now Blu-Ray)format for his movies since it enables him to add things that he never could in the theatrical version. I would also expect this to be the case with this release in terms of extra features.
Practically speaking, the studios are salivating since a blockbuster of this stature will probably generate revenue that at minimum, matches, if not exceeds, the enormous sums of money the movie made in the theaters and think about it, the 3D release will be coming later!

The movie was very entertaining and I'm looking forward to watching the BD once it's out. When I saw it all I could think about was how great it's going to look on CRT.

God, you're a downer, Wan. Some of your posts make me think you're about 75... "Get off my God damned lawn, ya obnoxious kids! Public theater? What? I ain't goin' to no public theater with no worthless humans... Give me me my walker so I can go back to my room and be alone."

Exactly.
Only I kinda liked and empathized with Walt Kowalski... I don't know what Wan's deal is.
Anyway.... Back to Avatar...

According to James Cameron, Avatar in Blu-ray 3D will be released in November. This information comes via TVPredictions, and the Wall Street Journal. I'm just going to stick with the 2D version of it since my LCD is a 4 year old model and not suitable for 3D.

Why are they still forcing DVDs down the throats of the healthcare reform victims such as ourselves?

According to a review at Amazon, the initial DVD/BD release will be pretty bare-bones -- no extras. PLUS there are supposedly 20-40 minutes of additional content (similar to LOTR:EE) that will be included on a later release. Might want to hold off for a while...

No extras is fine, but I'd rather not have to pay for the DVD I am never going to use--and they f-ing know it, too.

Different strokes... I actually really like getting DVD's with the movies - especially kids' movies... Not with this movie specifically, but that way I have something that's easily rippable.
