I wonder if RCs use protection.

Seems most computer repair people will charge about $100 for a fix like that and install the FREE AVG. AVG is alright, I like Avira better but the full page ad popup when it's doing updates is annoying. Other than that it's great and FREE as well. I install it, run a scan which it usually finds nothing - uninstall it then give it 6-8months and repeat. Virus free so far.
I've been using Google Chrome as it's much faster, FireFox is just too fat and bloated lately for my liking anymore.

I was using Bitdefender, and actually signed back up right before I took the computer in. Funny, AVG notified me of a virus a few minutes ago. I'll go use Bitdefender on my laptop and my other computers, I've got the ability to use it on 3 computers.

AVG utterly failed on my PC's. It missed 7 viruses. I use "AVAST!" now

I have a feeling we can go round and round on this. I learned from an ex g/f that all anti virus companies share a common database, so that everyone has access to all known viruses. SHe works for www.sophos.com.
The way each program handles viruses is different, but the knowledge of viruses is the same for all companies.
I had a guy long ago recommend Pest Patrol, he said that he used it for all his big clients, and when I installed it, it found a whopping 1200 problems that my existing program at that point didn't. Sure enough, that cleaned it up, but I have not heard of anyone commenting about Pest Patrol since, that was about 5 years ago or so. I'll bet if I list all programs, people here will have positives and negatives to say.

Very true but I can honestly say after I Avast'ed those viruses the machines ( all 6 of them ) ran so much better. Previously all the machines ran AVG for 3+ years. Just my 1.98 cent's

I have built hundreds of computers and installed windows with all the trimmings to them,
avg makes the computer slow down a lot more compared to avast. and if I am building a pc to a friend now I definitely will install avast.
its free and works better than most that You have to pay for.

Every time I install AVG my laptop slows right down, why is that? I have sufficient memory and drive space.
So I just install when there seems to be nasties and uninstall straight away as LOTREE does.

Curt,
You may want to try out Linux on another computer. Nothing scares me more than something starting to happen on a Windows computer. I had a couple of hiccups on my new laptop and almost had a heart attack. With Ubuntu, I have no problems opening up everything. I know John Dvorak mentioned this in one of his columns. He said he was amazed at all the crap that he sees when he uses his Mac.

I've had it on for a couple of days now, and I notice no slowdown. Twice now I've had a popup from AVG saying there's a virus or trojan or something coming in, and it caught it.
I know there are alternatives, but in my old age I'm resistant to change. This Dell has been pretty good to me actually. It's about 6 years old now, I paid $1600 for everything back then. I've had two other massive virus caused crashes, one at the 4 year mark, and that's when I changed the hard drive, as I didn't trust anything that was on for 4 years 24/7 with crucial data on it. So I got a 250 gig hard drive which is about 70% full, mainly with music that's all backed up.
What is surprising is that the Dell LCD monitor must have well over 20K hours on it at this point, probably closer to 40, and it's super reliable. The wireless mouse and keypad have massive discoloration of the keys and buttons, I have no lettering left on E. N, A, S, and OIU, and it keeps going. It died on me once while in the middle of a quote, and I pulled it apart, cleaned all the pads, and it's been working fine.
If I need to start from scratch again, I'd buy a Dell in a heartbeat.
BTW, my friend MulletMaster swears by her Mac, but I've sent her some MP3 files a couple of times, and she always emails back that she can't play them, so Apple ain't quite everything the Mac users say it is. If I want to switch, I know Darrell at Hammerhead will give me a great deal, as he now repairs Macbooks and desktops.

I understand, but it doesn't take nothing more than a blank CD to try out Ubuntu. You can use it as a live CD (meaning not installed) to see how you like it before permanently installing it on a hard drive. Matter of fact, a live CD as a back up could be very helpful. If something happened in the future to the Winbox, then you could still use the computer with the live CD.

I've had good luck cleaning that sort of malware using 'Combofix' and Malware Bytes. Sometimes tricking the malware into letting the tools run is a pain in the a$$, but usually the tools will clean it up once past that hurdle.
Ubuntu Live CD is dead easy to try. I second the suggestion. The only drawback is speed - an optical drive isn't as fast as the hard disk so launch times are a bit on the slow side. The Live CD should allow you to install to a hard disk though - just don't do it over top of the Windows drive by accident!

You can freeload off Spyhunter 3 free version for finding issues. Then manually deal with any issues.
Avast is a very good antivirus scanner that uses less resources then AVG. That said, I like AVG and use the faster free version. CCleaner should be a windows must have, along with Secunia Personal Software Inspector.
I also have used a second computer to deal with some tough to kill viruses. Much easier targets when they don't get to load...

Just thought it kind of funny...

Your problem is your using a licensed version of windows. It allows all the bad stuff in. You need to install a hacked version......
