How long had the projector been shut down? I'm just curious how long the tubes retain that kind of potential...

These tubes are supposed to drain off the HV on their own. However, I don't trust them and I always remove the HV lead and ground it directly to the chassis. I had already done a grounding and I still managed to get hit. I really don't understand how it happened as I thought for sure the tube was discharged.

The glass of the tube has alot of "dielectric absorption" where you can discharge the tube and after some time the charge will build back up.

Always discharge, wait, repeat......

Interesting and that explains a lot.

I didn't know that, either... I always assumed once it was discharged, it was discharged. Crazy... Ya learn something new every day!

They did.

The resultant stream of liquid from the body could not let the electricity flow back through the urine. However the puddle left by the liquid is another story. If you were standing in a puddle with flip flops or sandals or no shoes, then it's remotely possible. I'm willing to bet there was more liquid then just urine where this occurred.

The article says "burn marks indicated the way the electricity traveled through Messenger's body." I'll let you use your imagination but I'd guess they're pretty sure the electricity traveled through the urine stream.

Mythbusters is fun to watch but they're sh*tty scientists. They try one or two things and decide that proves all cases. Just because they couldn't reproduce it doesn't mean it's impossible.

I know that. But your & Dave's posts sounded like you were pointing to them as authorities. If your post was tongue-in-cheek, I retract.

Of course they can't reproduce ever possible scenario. But that episode was pretty good busting. They actually filled a gallon "bladder" and poured the liquid through a tube a 3 times what humans could pass and it would not allow for reverse flow of electricity. All tests were done on dry ground and only accounted for the stream of liquids. But then like I posted earlier if you were in water, helping cause a loop then it's, "PLAUSIBLE" Wink

OK, fine, then I will offer my personal first-hand experience. On the farm when I was a kid. There was an electric fence. I ***ASSURE*** you it is possible for electricity to travel through a stream of urine JUST FINE, thank you!!!!! Shocked Shocked Mr. Green

I love this forum... Very Happy

Gary, was the... ahem... package just mere inches from the fence, and maybe have damp shoes or something?

I won't get into how I know this, but if you've ever seen flash photography of somebody taking a piss, the stream turns into a series of blobs of piss not long after it leaves the, um, orifice... It's not technically a "stream" at all for very long. Think about it... If it were an actual stream, A) it wouldn't splash when you pissed in the toilet, and B) it would be practically silent. The only reason it appears to be a true stream is because our vision blurs it. So, I don't give a sh*t how good of a conductor urine is, it isn't going to conduct electricity if it isn't continuous. It also isn't going to conduct electricity if it doesn't complete a circuit to ground.

Now, if you were in bare feet and/or if your shoes were damp, AND you were standing RIGHT at the fence, I could see how you could electrify your boys.

As for the dude that pissed on the downed power line, I'd say in that case, all bets are off. That's easily believable. What's a typical neighborhood transmission line, 2400v? That is easily way over the threshold of rubber-soled shoes protecting you... At that voltage, humidity in the air, sweaty feet or skin, etc. all become modest conductors. Even if it's high resistance, a few hundred volts might be enough - never mind 1000 - to stop the ticker or burn your whacker. That hurts just thinking about it. Knowing what a spark plug or even just household 110 feels like into a finger/arm, I can't imagine... Never mind.

Gee... Smashes into a utility pole, then pisses on the downed power line and dies... I wonder if he was drunk?

"When I was young, and had no sense.... I took a Piss, on an Electric Fence...."

Thumbs Up

Yup, that would be me...

SC, I was probably 8 at the time. I don't remember details of how close or what shoes. I just remember I learned a lesson. Mr. Green

I doubt I was "mere inches" away. Even at 8 I wasn't THAT stupid. Very Happy More likely 2' or so. Don't remember the footwear but given it was on the farm I was probably wearing shoes.

Of course, if I remember right that electric fence would throw a spark 1/4" or more. Would that be enough to arc between droplets? Seems unlikely, but... I definitely wouldn't try it with a downed power line!!

The ground is almost always wet in Western Washington. It rains for four months nonstop in the spring.
