I guess that I have bad eye site but I do not see a great deal of difference between an HD movie and an SD that is upscaled through my PS3. Of course I am viewing at 1080i and not 1080p. SD tv looks like crap

It's probably not so much 1080i vs. 1080p, but assuming you don't have poor eyesight , it's probably a combination of the D50 being a little soft for HD and perhaps your viewing distance. Your room is pretty good sized, IIRC.
I know, even with my old 1271, there was quite a noticeable difference between scaled DVD and good HD from HD DVD or Blu-ray. I was getting to be an HD snob even back then. Here's a page I whipped up for my buddy Garen a couple of years ago. He was concerned that there wouldn't be enough difference between SD and HD on his 12xx to warrant buying HD sources. Roll over and off the images to see the difference. These are tight crops of the center of the screen to show what it looks like standing close to the screen... You can see a piece of green painters' masking tape in the center for sharpness/scale reference.

Once I got the G70... Fuhgettaboudit. HUGE difference. Massive. No comparison. I should do another test like that with some newer material like a Pixar movie or something - it would blow your mind.

Yeah, unfortunately I can't seem to get my 8500 dialed in properly so there is not an "oh my GOD" difference between SD and HD. It's noticeable, but it's not a religious experience. You may be having the same problem.

I can say, with the D50, HD looks OK but it's not the "OH WOW" difference. I did a setup on a Barco 808s and the difference from 480p to 1080i was HOLY SH-COW!

 Yeah, I know 8500's are capable of much more, even without MP's mods. But I have focus issues -- neither Dragan nor I were able to determine what the problem is -- so it's just not that hot for 1080p. Ohwell, I still enjoy it.

Not likely. I have HD145's. I have focus issues in various places (red especially) that I haven't been able to resolve. I don't *think* they're Scheimpflug but I haven't been able to find any other cause either.

For those of you who see a HUGE difference between Blu-ray and 1080p upscaled DVD, perhaps it is your Blu-ray player or DVD player rather than the source material that is the problem.
For me, Blu-ray is a noticeable improvement, but the upscaled DVDs look fabulous on my system. It is not worth replacing an existing DVD that I own or paying $8-$10 more for a Blu-ray. Some DVDs are as low as $5 and are a super bargain for a movie you might only watch every 1-2 years.
Instead, I have been purchasing DVD bargains that may, or may not, ever be on Blu-ray. And the quality is excellent.
I now have the complete Agatha Christie Poirot, the complete Sherlock Holmes, the complete Inspector Morse, the complete Andromeda, the complete Stargate, etc. These may never be re-released on Blu-ray, but the picture is excellent even if most, or at least the earlier parts of each set, are in Full Screen 1.33:1.
Although I must say, the complete FIREFLY series on Blu-ray is outstanding. Thanks Dave....
My system starts with my OPPO BDP-83 Blu-ray player, an OPPO HDMI switch, HDFURY2, Gamma-X, Marquee 9500LC Ultra.

Wayne, maybe it is something in the viewer and wanting to see real video information and not made up information up up-scaling MUST create. And since you can buy a lot of Blu-ray titles for under $10 (+200 titles) I am not seeing the advantage, financially or technically.

Still, Blu-Ray prices are dropping and I still do buy the new release Blu-Rays for $28-32 CDN when they come out and I really want it. If I think I will watch it more than once a year, I will buy it in Blu-Ray.
I am not arguing that Blu-Ray is not technically superior. It is. And I can see a noticeable difference. Just as I rarely watch a satellite channel broadcast in SDTV (and upconverted to 1080i by the receiver) anymore, because HDTV is SO MUCH better, I prefer Blu-Ray at 1080p to upconverted DVD. But, I can buy 3-5 great old DVDs ($5-$10 at WalMart) for the price of one new release Blu-Ray. Financially that makes sense to me.
I know you are passonate about this subject from past posts. And I know I can't win based on my subjective opinion of the difference between a very good upscaled DVD vs. Blu-Ray. But for me, until the prices for Blu-Ray come down a lot, I can live with the differences to own some very cheap, but very good, old DVDs.
One of my first Blu-Ray purchases was Patton ($12.99 WalMart), since I owned the DVD. I had recently watched the DVD and enjoyed it very much. But wow, what a difference in Blu-Ray. The opening scene has Patton standing in front of the flag. The difference in detail on his pistol and hairs on hand was amazing. We watched the whole movie again in Blu-Ray. I gave away the DVD.
But that does not change the fact that I watched the DVD a few weeks earlier and enjoyed it. I even enjoy the odd black and white movie.

Which? You mean The Public Eye? 1992, 1h39m. That aired in HD on Cinemax back in April of '08. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure they cropped it down from 2.35 to 1.78 (as they do with most). Though since it was filmed in Super35, they may have shown it Open Matte.
It may have come around again since then (or before then), but I only pay attention to the airing(s) I manage to grab.
