Resolution limitation with HDCP over VGA?

Well, the new HTPC is up and running and I'm happily enjoying DVD's played back with ZoomPlayer MAX. I know I can get a much better picture out of the lowly 07MS tubes as desktop text/icons/menus are sharp but DVD playback is soft unless sharpened with FFDShow filter. Even then I know the media is lacking detail my eyes want.

The ATI HD4200 on board video is HDCP compliant so now I'm considering getting a Lite-On iHOS104 BD-ROM.

My concern is how to get 1080P over VGA? Will the software player override the HDCP 540p output via VGA? How is everyone else getting around this?

Greg

No issue at all...1080p will work fine over analog as long as your video card has HDCP.

No such thing as HDCP being transported over VGA.

You will need to use the ATi control panel to override the EDID, and set the max res higher than 1600x1200.

You will probably also need to install a custom monitor driver, here is one for an XG-75, but it will be fine.

If you want a custom res, do a search, I've posted instructions a few times..

(And yes Wanman, even for VGA you need a HDCP compliant card if you want to use a commercial player. Don't ask me why, it's just like that. But it's no issue, all cards worth having are compliant. If you remux the bluray and use a player that works, it's a complete non issue.)

That's a card limitation based on a manufacturer's decision. High-bandwidth DIGITAL Copy Protection for analog just isn't in the specification. Of course, I am more than willing to claim ignorance on this, but something tells me I am correct in the HDCP spec.

Now, the video cards with any digital outputs will need to accommodate HDCP if the manufacturer's intent is to offer HDCP transport across the digital interface(s). It was probably just easier to place the road block on the whole card instead of selectively engineering it for just the digital interface(s).
