Update: I received my XG135. Overall, I'm quite satisfied. The actual condition of the projector is outstanding. Not a nick on the case, looks brand new. Although the tubes have some burn from static image, the rasters were set up very large on the tube faces. I figure I will be running 16:9 anyway and should be able to work around the burn. Where I'm going to set the image is about a 7-8 tube rating. This projector will be sitting for a long time before my new theatre is done!

But, I agree that he should shoot for a more significant upgrade - preferably to an 8" EM/LC set.

Agreed. To really notice the difference he should upgrade from ES focus to EM focus and from non-LC to LC. Tubes should stay 8" or go 9" (more $$$). Colour filtering should also remain. Otherwise the new projector will have colours that are worse.

The G70 is a good idea, as is the NEC XGLC (though loud), or a Zenith 1200 if you can find one!
See where they sit in the list here as compared to the 1252 and D50: http://www.curtpalme.com/Projector_Rankings.shtm
