I just picked up a hier 42ep24s (lg) has sound no pic, i have no bad fuses, from what i read the y sus board is bad, I would like to fix it, any help would be great! I have a solder desolder station, cap wizard, logic probe, and volt meter, where do i start? Why do people replace these boards rather than fix them?

This is an EDTV. The question should be why do people repair these obsolete displays instead of replacing them. They are disposable. Sorry, I cannot help you.

Well, you've some to the right place. There are quite a few techs here, at least one old arcade guy and a whole bunch of propeller heads.
What's the model number of the 65" projection set?

Start a new thread on this one. The Mitsubishi's are a great TV.

Welcome stuff. Pay no mind to Wan, he has been known to be a dbag from time to time. He likes poking the snake with a stick, he hasn't figured out yet that we bite back!
As for the LG, I too am getting into plasma repairs, but unfortunately have found that it's cheaper buying used boards on eBay than it is repairing your board. As a guy that makes his living repairing CRT PC boards, I should be the last one recommending this, but with some parts being not available, LG schematics not existing, that's probably the way to go. ONce the set is working, then compare the bad board to the good one, and chances are you'll repair it. Throw it back on eBay and get your money back.
Now, don't be so quick to write off the Ysus board. While they do fail often, most of the 10 LGs I've had here that had no pix at all weren't the Ysus board, and the ones that had bad Ysus boards had some form of image, just not a watchable one.
Macguyver is the right guy to chime in here. He's got way more experience than I do. What I wil[l say though is check all voltages going to the various boards. My LGs all had small printing next to the connectors indicating what the voltage supplies were.
Check for a faint glow of the plasma, indicating that your problem is a processor one, or low level video if it's dead. THat indicates the plasma is firing, and that the Y and Z boards are probably OK. If you get no faint light out of the plasmas, then I'd suspect either a processor or Y or Z board or power supply issue.

Good advice so far. I'll just add to check the fuses on the SUS boards. I want to know if they are blown or not.

Also, does the set stay powered up? Or does it shut down after a bit? Does it have an internal fan? If so, see if it continues to spin, indicating something other than a short. A short somewhere will usually shut down the power supply.

Curt. Note in his first post he says he has sound but no pic. This would indicate it is not shutting down. It would also indicate that the input is functioning or at least part of it. Then the question of does the menu work come into play. Just some info for ya...

Damn, I wish they were all that easy! I got in three today to work over. One is pretty easy: The cable TV connector is snapped off. It fires up, menus are OK.
Haven't checked anything else on it or the other two. One is a 36" Sharp Aquos, a late model with two HDMI inputs. I'l bet it's fine, someone just upgraded. Whee!

If it's anything like the 3+ and counting we've had to replace, it will randomly turn it self on and eventually randomly lose sound.
