I'm sitting here watching the Cards/Saints game and suddenly there is a loud snap sound from the rear of the PJ and the image goes off for a half second. sh*t. Is this an indication of my quad or splitter dying?

USually not, worst case it's an HV lead from the tubes to the splitter.

Sounds like partial short in tube, some crap between cathode and heater for example. Every now and then it snap and mute picture, sometimes projector shut down after loud snap. If you are lucky you see how it flash inside tubes neck. Very Happy

It usually should go away with normal use, but process can be speed up using flashing white screen.
Crt run in cycles flashing function can be found from service menu.

My tube snapped few times during movie, but two hour flashing burned that crap away...

Blimey! Thanks for this info Ile. Was on my third movie when an almighty flash and snap sound took out the display for a second.

I thought the unit had caught fire, I panicked like hell.

It might be time to vacuum out all the dust again. I'm sure the dust isn't helping anything.

I had one or two similar experiences with previous Barcos like this. I'd say dust on the HV lines causing an arc someplace. It does scare the s--t out of you when it happens. It only happened once or twice in over 6.5 years of Barco ownership. Failing quads tend not to make the loud snap in my (limited) experience.
