.. is to an art gallery in New York. They just bought three Sony 12XX, and I'm putting all red tubes in one set, all green in the second, and all blue in the third.
With the buyer's permission, I'll post the location, and will ask for some pictures once it's all set up.

Does this have anything to do with the guy who was asking about separating the colors a few weeks ago? Sounds along the same lines.

Well, at least the tubes should wear evenly. But color calibration's gonna be a bitch!
Convergence may be problematic, too, for one given projector. Align green to green, then green to green, which one is which?
It would create some very interesting possibilities for a triple stack.

I'm not sure if they are stacking. I told them that they would not get a perfect stack, but if they could use three monochrome images, then each set would be super bright..

Oh, God - Yes, it will SUCK to try to converge - even just one. Total PITA.

Now if they were G90,s Ampro 4600's, or Barco 909's and the 9500LC Ultras where you have more geometry controls it wouldn't be that bad. But the 12xx series I ma not so sure, crab knows that better.
The marquee up and over stack I ran for a while looked great at 1080i.
But getting color uniformity would be really hard. Id say youd have to run each PJ with only one color showing on each, like the center tube, adjust greyscale for that set of colors, then move onto the next. so your doing say the tree colors stacked vertically. The it be fairly close Id assume. you could fine tune the whole array Id bet by just adjusting one tube from each PJ after, preferably the center.
How would some one else do the colors?

This sounds pretty cool, I hope they send you some pictures when it's setup, whatever it is they'll be doing with them?
Heck, depending on where in NY this is I may have to check it out in person.

Color calibration would not be difficult, but it would be tedious.
To start, set the gray scale using only the center tube on each projector.
After that, I would set all three reds to have the same light levels at 30IRE and 80IRE to match the red tube used to create D65. Obviously you would have to mute two tubes at a time and work your way across the projector. After that each red tube will be emitting about the same amount of light across the stimulus range which will combine close to make D65. Do the same for blue, then for green.
After that, adjust the gray scale by trimming the cut or drive on one tube at a time on each projector (this will also give very fine control for gray scale).
When you find your values for D65, go back to monochrome and again measure 30IRE and 80IRE. Write down the flt values for each colored projector while it runs monochrome. Then go back, look at each tube separately again for 30IRE and 80IRE. Check to make sure any of the three tubes is not contributing more or less to the light level than any other tube If you find uneven light output among the three tubes, tweak each tube the way it needs to go while maintaining the flt values for each color that you recorded.
Confused... well that should do it...
