|
|
LPD, or Laser Phosphor Display is a system that uses a laser to scan across a screen with phosphor on it. The laser replaces the traditional electron gun. Now, like traditionally-employed usage for the word 'phosphor', which in CRT is actually a metal halide, I wonder if this holds the same non-sequitur application in LPD.
They have a brochure marketing their solution, but this brings up a great many questions for those that love phosphor-based display technologies. For instance, almost all of the scenario images of application there is a ton of ambient light, which to me is like marketing for devices with poor black levels.
Maybe this will be Art's next projection system? We know he likes a big picture.

Looking at the attached image makes me disappointed. The array is akin to flat panels, and one of the shortcomings therein is seen whenever you have a b/w image (think Renaissance the individual 'sub-pixels' are revealed. I am surprised they didn't choose a layered approach like color slide film where the upper layers allow light to penetrate to the lower layers--this would have allowed the sub-pixels to be on top of one another instead of side-by-side.
I would imagine that the sub-pixel boundaries are governed by the 'spot' of the laser beam, but then again the three phosphors appear to operate using different wavelengths of lasers.

Athnaasios, I was under the impression this was front projection. oops, did I miss something?
Curt, you spend a lot of time on the enemy forum. Shame on you!

From what I seen so far it looks like small rear projection boxes that they put into walls so far.
I dont think they are using mirrors either i think its a large phosphor covered panel that the lasers shot onto.
I could be wrong though. I just skimed the material you posted.

That is funny, since AVS pretty much gave Curt a hell of a lot of business.
As for the technology, I am surprised you found it so quickly. It is a scalable tile system. There target market is large signage like airports etc.

Athanasios, you are correct in that they are using segmented (they call it tiles) rear projection setups. Boo! Spanky, the mirror is for the laser to allow laser beam to scan left/right/top/down. Electron beams used magnetic steering, but lasers are using mirrors to steer with.
