Now it looks like you can have both, a stand alone player, and a digital archive of movies that the stand along player can choose from. SWEET! |
That is Sweet, I love my new Oppo, and with the Region free card I plan to install it will be even better!

Yes, John - There's a region-free hack for the BDP-83.
I like the Oppo well enough... It just seems a little pricey. If it were $299, I'd already have one. At $399, I'd be hesitant, and would probably be setting money aside for it. At $499, it just feels a little steep, and I can't do it... I mean, it's an Oppo we're talking about. At least it has some aluminum on the faceplate - it's got that going for it.
You know... They did the BDP-83SE "Special Edition" with the upgraded audio and RS-232 control, and tacked on $400 for a total of $899... I wish they'd go the opposite direction and offer a stripped-down (hardware) version with no analog or SPDIF outputs at all... Just an HDMI output... Basically a BD "transport" so to speak. If they could do that and sell it for $299, I'd probably give it a try.

its plug and play, unplug the existing cable plug in the region free cable. its just like the cables in a PC. simple.
One thing I really like about it is it has a 1/2 size shrink function, so for my blend i just cycle to that size and I ahve 1.85.1.78 movies all set!! no messing with aspect ration presets on my blend scalers.
And its image quality is awesome!! the feature for making fit in your system is outstanding, its worth the 500 I paid.
I still love my LG's dual format players, but this is just a step above them.

In my setup i use both types.
A Philips Blu-Ray player to shift the subtitles on my scope setup and additional to that a HTPC.
But with a Lumagen HDQ no problem to handle both
