Well, Tax return season is upon us... and i'm starting to reap the bennies... one of which is i'll have the cash to convert my small back BR into a mini theater. I've decided not to use my Runco Crt's So i'm looking for a digital... going to project on a 96 inch widescreen.

A local HT shop has the Sim2 Domino 60.. a single chip DLP. http://www.sim2usa.com/home/us/domino/d60

It surprised me 'cause i usually dont like DLP's. This had a nice image, good color, no rainbows or motion artifacts.... for 5000.00

The other under consideration is the VPL VW-60. http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921665192796

A sony 3 panel SXRD. I have seen this one as well the colors are a little richer...
It's also 5k.

Has anyone any experience w/ either of these? Comments suggestions???

Thanks

Not so. I'm keeping the Twins, and they will, one day, form my widescreen blend!!!

But my room is too small and i'd need too much to use one in my current setup.

Your room is smaller than 12' by 12? I put a 6PG in that kind of room and projected it onto a 92" (in 16:9 mode) screen.

My room is 10 X 12.

My projectors need a little work, as well as i'd need a processor .... etc....

With the Digital it's simpler as well as brighter, this will be used for Super Bowl Parties, and stuff like that.

Em,
You should follow the LED pj discussion. Tse is really high on this tech. Instead of putting $5k into one of those pjs, I would look at a used digital to get you by for maybe a year. I have seen RS1s going for under $2k and RS2s for low $2ks. At Cedia in Sep, the new batch of LEDs will be out and I think there will be some nice pjs to look at.

As far as the two pjs you are looking at, I haven't seen the 60, but I did see the 85. It is nice. I haven't seen the Sim, but I have seen the other dlps. They are nice as well. Ken loves the JK Samsung, which is probably a step above the Sim. I saw the motion resolution issue on the Samsung, but it didn't bother me. I would say you need to decide what matters more on/off or ANSI. For $5k, you should look at the current line up of JVCs. I think the 25 is over $5k, but the 15 is I believe per AVS pricing in the $4ks.

I was busy, but that's exactly what I was going to say, Spanky... Look at a year or two old used machine to get you by for a year or two... It seems like with LED and some of the other things going on, digital is poised for another big leap forward in the next year or two. Personally, I'd hate to buy a $5000 machine that would be worth maybe $2500 in a couple of years. I'd prefer to find a deal on a used RS-2 (which is very good, IMHO) to get me by.

If nothing else, PM Dave and post over in the under-20k forum at AVS... Few hear have really looked at the digitals that in depth, nor know what all the strong and weak points of the top models are - for instance, the Sim2 vs. VW-60.

Here's the other thing, John... If you're not going to use them in the immediate future, you may as well sell the Runcos. I don't know what you paid for them, but they're not even worth $2000 any more. If it's going to be a year or two before you build a nice dedicated room, then dump them now, and you'll be able to buy something amazing in a digital by then. Seriously. I love CRT as nearly everybody here, but if you're not going to use them and you're shopping for $5000 digitals, why sit on 'em?

I got my VW60 for way less than $5000. I don't remember but I think it was about half that or maybe even $2200.

I actually think you would have a hard time finding one for that price unless you insist on buying from a custom installer who loves to rip people off.

Anyway,... I would say get the VW60.... I may be biased though since I own one. Smile

I see used ones very cheap. Throw in a new bulb and you're good as new most likely.

Mine was refurbished. It's lamp hours and total hours only have about 3 to 4 hours difference though. I think it may have been DOA or something before it was refurbished but then again... I'll never know.

By the way,.... I see used VW50's way cheap. But,... I'm glad I got the VW60. When you look into it the VW60 adds some very nice features. 1080/24 is a major one. It also has something that helps with anamorphic lens use which is great to have even though I may never go there.

I think maybe the user convergence adjustments were first on the VW60 or maybe the VW40. I don't use them but it's nice you can converge a bit for nostalgia sake.

I am not sure I would go with the 50. Cine4home found that there was some panel degradation. It is not totally confirmed, but it would be enough to sway me to JVC. I had the chance for a 50 at $800 a couple of months ago, but passed for this reason. Actually, I waffled and it was sold, so the decision was made for me. Still, I didn't feel like I lost out. To me, I can see the potential in LEDs. I hope to see some better and more innovative LEDs at this Cedia. Hopefully, there will be a nice selection below $10k. At 2011 Cedia (hopefully still in the ATL), I hope we see some really cheap LEDs.

Nope! Indianapolis in 2010 and then Dallas for 2 years.

Do you have some news that I don't know about?
http://www.cediacrosspoint.com/content/my-thoughts-cedia-expos-indy-return

According to that article, Atlanta is still on for 2010 then Indy for 11 and 12. That will be fine for me, as I can go to Indy if I still care at that time.

Well gents, i screened the Sim2 today. I had the shop setup a Blu ray player w/ the Sim2 on a studiotek 130 92 in screen.... i brought my own discs...

First up, Blade Runner. I watched the opening scene, where the aircar flies thru the night over the city, the black of the night and the lights like fireflies.....

BLECH! No black of night AT ALL!!! It was not even close to black! Even the opening credits, white letters against a black backdrop. HORRIBLE...

Next. Hidalgo. The start of the race, the sun and sand the horses, lots of skin tones....

BLECH!!! Washed out colors, color wheel effect ..... NASTY!!!!!

Next.... Star trek.... Just as bad....

This Really SUCKS!!!!!

Thumbs Down

No offense, em but you should know that dlp still can't do good on/off. If you don't like the color, then you will have to wait for LEDs which may be here sooner than you think. According to Scott and CJ, the colors on LEDs are better than CRT.

I still stand by picking up a used JVC. The JVC should be more than good enough for you. In a year or two, you can dump it for a good LED.

Yeah...I've seen some used RS-20 in the $3500-$4000 range. You guys in the big cities are lucky..Other than Cliffy's setup I've never seen another theater than mine.

My boss has an RS1 but I've never seen it turned on. The idiots that installed it connected it up using component not HDMI...I think he paid big bucks too, I don't have the heart to tell him I think he got screwed.

Mike,
I am not that lucky. I haven't seen anyone's theater in Atlanta. I have asked a couple of people, but silence. I haven't asked Wan yet, but that is my fault. The mid FL coast isn't big, but they have VDC.Smile I have also seen CJs set up. In South Fl, I have only seen one other CRT. I have been to Cineramax's place a couple of times. Honestly, you had and are getting back Cedia.
