So I had my hands in a new, very very high dollar pre amp today. Yes they break too. Anyways, we (me and the device owner) were kinda surprised at some of the design flaws in the unit. Actually the failure was partly contributed to a poor design. But you would think when you spend that kinda of money it would be well thought out. I would think that the higher cost is probably geared more towards the software and device control and features. Other then a nice pair of line transformers, the electronics appear to be pretty basic.
Anyways, it was fun just poking around and smelling solder fumes with a fellow CRT'er.

Oh please! The whole idea behind ultra-expensive gear is to rob dummies of their money (following the money brains inverse law).
For instance, I can hear only 95% of what the ideal human could in terms of a musical ear. Why the heck would I spend $100K on a pair of speakers seeking that last 5% I'll never hear? Well, I wouldn't. First, I don't have that kind of money, nor that deficient in brains.

I don't think it is proper for me to give out specific info here. But if the owner wants to, that's fine with me. I was just speaking generally.

Oh c'mon, you're breaking the guy code by not giving details!
Don't post who the amp belongs to, just post what make and model it was and what's wrong with it. Some pix of the internals would be good too!

If Runco is any example, then there is a direct inverse relationship between the amount of "engineering" that goes into a product by the seller, and the price...

Does that mean the original owner of my beige Runco DTV940 (Barco 708) got ripped off? LOL

With a certainty even greater than death, yes, the original owner of your Runco, most certainly got ripped...but then again, if he could afford it, he likely didn't care...
