Are these two beasts essentially neck and neck, or does one edge the other in some aspect?

XG for color, probably the Sony for capabilities. At least that is what I gathered from folks over the years. BTW, there is no such thing as an XG1352 that isn't liquid-coupled. Give back some of those man points.

I'm betting they're pretty close, the G70 has a geometry gull wing distortion at the top and bottom that cannot be completely corrected for, I'm not sure if the NEC has anything similar or not. The G70 should be a little quieter than the XG.
If one of them has HD-134 lenses vs. HD-18 on the other I would choose that one.
Really it comes down to tube condition.

G70 has an annoying AKB line. XG is a bit noisier.
Both have occasional failures. XG seems easier to fix (at least to me).
The colours will be identical. Same tubes. Same C elements. Same lenses.
If you turn the AKB line off on the G70 (and get lucky with the colour settings being ok), then no one will be able to tell the image apart.

I concur with Mark, but I've had few issues repairing either. Both have issues, but both can be repaired, and parts are fairly plentiful for both.

Mark, I have no AKB line. For the life of me, I can't remember what I did to get rid of it, but after lots and lots of reading here and AVS archives (Doug B?) there ain't no more AKB line in my room.
And I agree - I don't see how the color would be substantially different between the two.
There is definitely a little gull-wing in the G70 that's impossible to dial out. My old 12xx was better in that regard (and that regard only) which, pisses me off. I'm a nut for good geometry, so that was one disappointing thing about the G70. It's not horrible, but it's certainly noticeable with scope material.
Isn't it also a little tricky with timings to get the XG to do 1080p well?

I don't care for it to do 1080p...I find 720p to be more enjoyable than 1080i, and I think 1080p would be pushing the limits in a way that I wouldn't be getting much more for the extra stress on the electronics.

You must have disabled AKB then set your Bias/Gains or G2 to compensate. It wasn't Doug who helped out...he wouldn't know a G70 from a cuisinart
Yes, an XG is more prone to image wrap than a G70 (or Xtra).
They are basically equal. Availability and condition are the deciding factors.

With the ABG "on" line at the top of the pic with the G70 its an easy fix when running 16:9, Just shift the raster on the tube face A little,
cant do anything to get rid of ABG line apart from turning ABG off if ran in 4:3 ....
Cheers...

It still washes out the picture, ruining your contrast.
Even with a 2.35:1 image on a 16:9 raster it drives me nuts.
The only proper solution is "OFF".

No secret to this, turn ABG off and compensate with G2 and color controls. It's not needed.

Does that always work?
I was under the impression that sometimes you can't get enough adjustment, particularly if you have the later firmware with no adjustable G2.

That sounds right - I forgot about that.

even though I run the older firmware with the G2 adjustment ?...

Well I wouldn't.
It is ruining the ANSI contrast in the top half of your image, and a fade to black should not have a white stripe at the top.
In the G90 the ABG/AKB line turns off after 20mins, which is better, but off is best.

Thank's Mark,
I was'nt aware of ABG affecting the ANSI contrast,
So once I turn ABG off and the image goes dark I should just Adjust the G2 to compensate ??...
I have ran my G70 with ABG ON from the day I got it way back in 2000, It just goes to show you learn something new every day...
Cheers...

After you turn it off, set G2, BIAS, and GAIN to the defaults in the setup manual then adjust from that baseline.
