The HDM is disabled when a yoke is unplugged from it. (The little wire loop on the yoke connector passes power to the output mosfet driver chip) That will also prevent the HVPS form coming up. To test the yokes connect an external yoke (insulate from chassis) in place of the internal yoke that is unplugged. VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!!!! Unplug P14 before doing this as letting a tube operate with the yoke not connected can permanently damage that tube.

So he'd need to test each yoke independently with an external yoke one connector at a time?
Could he just let the yoke hang since its ceiling mounted? Or should he cover it with something.

With no sweep it probably wouldn't be long before it burned a hole through the front glass I kid, or at least I think I do...how much power does that electron beam have? Could it shatter the front glass from local overheating, similar to running the raster off the tube face (except much worse)?

So it could still be a yoke then? OK To do this test on a ceiling mounted machine, how do you make sure the yoke is insulated and I am insulated from the voltages?
Pulling P14 for sure first.
And did the HVPS get disqualified from the list of culprits?

Let the yoke hang is ok. Bad stuff probably happen if it comes unplugged while the HDM is running. Do not touch the horizontal winding connections while unit is running. Greater than 1000V pulses are present. Not only shocks the crap out of you, burns and cauterizes the contact points at the same time. Takes forever to heal. Be careful.
Yep. Check one yoke at a time.
The tube face is designed to handle about 35W (think of a 40W light bulb) of power spread over the faceplate. Several square inches. If that power is confined to one thin line or a small spot it takes only a few millisecs to burn through the phosphor. Let it go a few tenths of a second or more and it will melt the glass. I've seen craters in tube faceplates when the sweep collapses with enough drive on the tube to make a bright image. Be careful.
It is always a good idea to turn the contrast down very low and unplug P14 when messing around with stuff like this. The cool thing about P14 is you can plug it in and if you watch the tube face you have a chance to unplug P14 if you start to see a spot or line coming on. Unplug it quick and you might save the tube.

Great what about the HVPS itself, ruled out, or still possible?

Dave I think this is to just check, if it is in fact, one of the yokes. If your cell phone works after all coils are tested then i'd think its the HVPS, unless its the deflection coil your testing also
One more question Scott, the coil that will not be on any tube, and just hanging freely. Wont that also possibly create some kind of EMI that might still affect the cell phone?
Could he maybe make some kind of test box to minimize that possibility?
like put the coil in a box covered on the outside with a few layers of tin foil? Not sure if it make a difference or not.
And dave maybe tape the two connectors together while its hanging so it will not come apart.
I bet Mike might have a few deflection coils lying around, I know I do.

Yep I am going to borrow a HVPS from Mike on Thursday. I believe he has a yoke laying around after all, He's the first guy to say,
: I think it's a yoke a long time ago.
It's not like it just dawned on me one day, that came from MIKE. So I will get a yoke from him and the safest directions on how to proceed. I think we're getting really close to curing GOZER's ills.
Neckboards, CLM, VIM, SWB, powercord, Yokes, HVPS, only thing we haven't tested is the damned Motherboard.
I'm confident we will get it right.

OK I took the HVPS to Mike's house, we put it in his test chassis with his new focus mods in it, ran the scope and the resultant wave was rock solid clean. I also put my cellphone right on top of the test unit and it worked fine with my HVPS in that unit. So I guess it's on to testing the yokes. Mike lent me a yoke for the testing.
So I'll finish this novel soon.

And then they discovered that one of the tubes was arking internally
And who in their right mind takes a cel phone in to watch a movie.

No that's like Noah.
Arking: the process of building a large wooden ship to hold many pair's of animals.

I'll say it again. No cell phones in the movie theater.

Youz guys are way to funny.
I saw a AmPro 4600 (which happens to look like a swamp boat) that housed a family of mice
I don't know if they entered 2 by 2 but I evicted their a$$ in one shot.
Now if that phone means more to you than the projector, then I think it's time for a Marquee Viking funeral
You do that by dropping it into the water while it's still plugged in. That's how you make a Ark arc.

I used my 486 DX2 50 MHz lap top for the first 3500 or so. Including posting those bat pictures via a CF card to PCMCIA adaptor and a parallel port to ethernet adaptor running Win95 on 12 megs of ram.
Awesum setup.
This dual core 4000/3 gig is a bit faster but not nearly as cool.

Actually with **JUST** Win95 and IE or Netscape running TWO windows ONLY. It's pretty zippy.
Keep in mind it's all text once you are a member. Any banner add's couldn't be displayed anyways as there's no flash player
I'll have to fire that up and take some pictures sometime.

Your missing the point.
If GOZER is knocking out the cellphone it has a problem. It should not interfere with any other electronic devices. So the cellphone has helped detect an underlying problem that is getting worse. The arcing kicked in the protection circuit the other day and turned of the video output for 3 seconds.
Chip as for getting GOZER into the water, if you'll help buy holding the heavy side, walking in backwards, while wading into the water first, I'm all for it.
As for a Viking funeral/JEDI funeral, I'm for that too, for me. Put me in a little boat and fire the arrows away at my corpse.
