I just opened one of these 2002 vintage Ultras that I got in, and the HD10E lenses sure look like the Cine 9 HFQ 900 lenses. A front plastic barrel, metal housings for everything else.
Just curious, can someone confirm?

I have seen some people claim that the HD120 is also the same lens?
I am looking for a set of HFQ900 lenses or an equivalent.

Nope.
The HD10E or HFQ900 lens has a screen width from 7ft. out to 72ft.
The HD120 lenses are from a group, that has a range from 10ft (HD120) - 14ft (HD180) and 29ft (HD300)
The HFQ900 covers the entire range of that group and more than twice the range of the HG300.
New Super high definition, liquid coupled, and fully color corrected F1.15 lenses, optimized for particular screen sizes
Standard lens
HFQ 900
Screen width from 2 m / 7 ft. up to 22 m /72 ft.
Optical resolution 12 lp / mm

wouldnt the hd10gt17 (hd120) be just as good as the hfq900 when using a screen width of 2.5 mtr?
both 12lp/mm

No. nothing out there is in the same camp as the HFQ900 lenses.
It's really an entirely NEW lens system.

I still find it strange that the front barrel is plastic. that really takes away from that 'expensive' lens feel.

They sure don't make things like they used too.
I read somewhere on this forum that the plastic was used to reduce the effect heat might have!!

thats what i thought how else would it support such a large range of screen diagonals.
is there an extra lens inside and if not how is it done that they got such a wide range.

I have always wondered about the plastic front barrel - in agreement with Curt, not the
finest feel. But when you consider the tooling costs to injection mold the GRP and then
the jigs required to precision machine it to such tight tolerances, it seems more likely that they may
have had an engineering reason rather than cost savings, since it had to cost considerably
more to make the change. And the only reason I can think of would be related to thermal stability.
A very fine lens set regardless...And, I personally tested good focus down to much less than 6 foot screen width.
I think that the HD120 is actually a HD10GT, and is not in my experience the same as a HD10GT17.
My recollection is that Terry succeeded in gently removing the Barco sticker on a HD120,
and found a US Precision Lens sticker for HD10GT. My comparison was that the HD120 was
more limited in screen sizes, although very good in its range.

G | I found same HD10GT label under my BG1200 HD120 sticker, no mention about 17 and can't say if it's same or not.

Have a question my HFQ900 lenses have part of the front coating gone, its like someone put a piece of tape on them and when they removed the tape it lifted a piece of the coating. Is there anything that should or could be done?

They are toast, send them to me immediately!
You shouldn't see an issue on screen wiht the coating missing, do you? You should be able to use as is. I've had lenses in the past that had some of the AR coating removed on the outer lens and I didn't see it on screen at all.
If you wanted to try and repair it, I would give 3M a call. I know they sell a lens coating. You may be able to repair it. If you can't see it on screen though, I would leave it be and enjoy them.

Exactly you may make things worse by over spraying AR coating material. If you can't see an effect on screen leave it alone.

No, I can't see it in the picture. When the lights are in the room it catches you eye.
