I'm attempting to calibrate my Sony KDL-46W4500 LCD using the 'Greyscale & Colour Calibration for Dummies' guide.

I can access the white balance settings in my TV's service menu, but there are levels and values for RGB, not individual bias and gain settings.

I've seen on some forums that people with the same model LCD have R-Bias, R-Gain, etc, settings, but I'm putting that down to being slightly different models for different countries. I'm in Australia.

The white balance menu looks like this:

Initialize
Select level
Set R value
Set G value
Set B value
Save level
End

Experimenting in the menu, I've found that I can select 5 levels (0-4) and each of these levels can be made to display a fullscreen image of varying levels of grey (0 dark grey, 4 almost white). For each level I can adjust the values of R, G and B.

Has anyone come across a white balance menu like this before?

Instead of adjusting the equivalent of RGBLowEnd and RGBHighEnd are described in Step 6 of the guide, I'm thinking I should be adjusting the R, G and B values for each of the levels, using that level's greyscale image, so that all three RGB Level bars in HCFR are at or close to 100%.

Unless your primaries exactly match those given for the standard you're adjusting to, or you're using a custom color target based on the actual primaries, those RGB bars won't be accurate. It'll be better adjusting to x,y values (.3127, .3290 for D65) if HCFR reports them.

I've had a go at adjusting the red and blue values for each level to match D65 values (x = 0.313, y = 0.329), although I'm not convinced that the test screen for each level is a proper greyscale screen.

Once I've set each level to as close to D65 as I can each one tends to look a little red, especially the full white screen that has to be close to 100 IRE.

Then when I run a greyscale calibration using a calibration disc, each IRE level is lacking red (only 65% instead of 100%).

DeltaE for IRE 40 -70 is around 15, which is much better than the 35 I was getting before attempting calibration, but I'm not sure what to do next.

Does using a full-screen greyscale test image rather than a window effect the target D65 x,y values?

Okay, I've been doing a bit more reading and it appears my "red" issue may be a problem with my Eye One Display 2.

My D2 is at least a year old and although it hasn't been used before it may be underreading the red levels.

I purchased the D2 12 months ago when I got my TV, but this weekend past was the first chance I got some time to sit down and actually work through a greyscale calibration.
