I bought the AVIA calibration DVD and it was pretty simple.

For a thorough and informative step-by-step guide, you can't do better than Kal's GREYSCALE & COLOUR CALIBRATION FOR DUMMIES.
Avia or DVE you can get from Amazon or most other DVD/BD sellers.

So where do you start when you have so many devices with controls for each??
Let's start with a simple system,
A CRT projector (of course )
A Scaler
A Blu-ray player
So which, and how, do calibrate each of these for the best performance and black level, plus no white clipping??
Appreciate your comments
Cheers
Steve

I picked up a i1 display 2 used from someone here. Using HCFR and Kals guide I was able to get my pj looking WAY better. For patterns I used the free AVSHD patterns on AVS. You can burn a bluray compatible dvd too. All the patterns you need will be on there.
It seemed the more I read about my barco pj (manuals, here on Curt's site, AVS, etc) and the more times I read Kals guide, I just kept getting better and better at it. Unless you have someone do it for you, or show you how to do it, their is no shortcut to gaining your own experience. Kals guide is the best resource I've found so far.
So, I spent less than $100 but my big investment was time.

You need a meter and software too. The calibration DVD won't calibrate anything by itself. Yes, there are some instructions on it to set brightness/contrast/etc, but it doesn't go very far and doesn't do anything for colours.
A calibration disc is good for setting brightness and that's about it.
Note also that the greyscale patterns on Avia are incorrect. They're off and shouldn't be used. The authors even admitted to this. Why it wasn't recalled I have no idea....
