I've had 3 people contact me lately with " I put everything back together and no pic". 1 has been confirmed and fixed as being 1 pin off on ribbon cable. Here's another, does this look shifted to you?

Yepp it's off, i did that once went through everything and went Doh !!! after i realized i did it.
Drags, on the VDM you don't change the little mickey mouse resistors coming in on the power rails? R5.R6.R92. and R94? I used the same ones as near the larger caps,
more stable power to the board, I am looking at adding inductors there possibly in series.

Athanasios | yeah I don't know, what's the point of doing all this metiulous work, being careful, testing everything, and then sending it people who are going to put it all together wrong and f*ck it up anyway. Then send e-mails like "it was all working before I sent it to you".
This machine is now running after the Ribbon cable was plugged in correctly but it's got a vertical hold problem, probably damaged something on the VDM. I guess Curt's got a repair job coming..........

looks like it jumped over two pins that would put the V-drive and the SCl on voltage pins, id check the resistors and diodes following the lines and then the chips themselves.

When my dad designed the electronics for our motion systems, he set up the pinouts so a one-pin shift either way won't damage anything. Comes in handy during bleary-eyed late night troubleshooting...

Not to mention that the ribbon is not fully inserted.
Buy a real projector with real connectors. Ribbons suck!!!

Dragan: When you ship back stuff to customers I'd suggest taping pieces of paper over the ribbon connectors with the following text:
| Quote: | | STOP! READ THIS FIRST! MAKE SURE TO LINE THE PINS UP CORRECTLY WHEN YOU PLUG THIS BACK IN. FAILURE TO DO SO WILL DAMAGE YOUR PROJECTOR. QUESTIONS? EMAIL DRAGANM@CURTPALME.COM |
By having it OVER the connector they'll be force to read/remove it before plugging it in. They always put stickers/text right on commercial products where it matters for those people that never read the manual so that this way they're at least forced to read something minimal.
I bet the people that did this have no idea that the pinout is important or matters. Why would they? They don't know electronics.

This is my biggest gripe with "provided mods"
If they can't do the mod themselves by following simple instructions then most likely they shouldn't be inside the machine in the first place.
1. I will never sell something that I have modified.
2. I will never again buy something that someone else has modified.
I bought a DOA projector that someone else attempted to modify for parts. I have never seen such butchery in my life.
It drives me frigging nuts when a newbee buys a projector and before he even learns how to set it up, is convinced to start modding it.
Rant off....

Chip: You can't compare some hack job projector that you bought and compare it to what Dragan does. You're classifying all "mods" as the same. Not the same as all.

That doesn't make any sense. You're saying that the skill involved in removing/re-installing a few cards is the same as doing desoldering/soldering? I know a pile of people that do mods and will never *EVER* sell DIY mod kits because the skill involved is not anywhere near the same thing as just unplugging/re-plugging the part.
Why does anyone get a professional painter to paint rooms in their house if all it takes is a few gallons of paint and a roller? I mean, anyone should be able to follow instructions right? Pour the paint in the pan, dip in the roller, apply to wall, repeat. What's so hard about that?

What gave it away? Was it the "butchery" comment
No, it wasn't Gary's 1209/S. It was a E-home It took me three days to bring it back to factory and clean up the mess. Then I gave it away.
Kal,
Not you, Curt, Dragan, The president of the US or God himself is going to change my opinion of mods for profit.
It is my opinion and I'm schticking to it.

Man I was really bummed last night, doing a set like this is really hard and then to have it all jacked up on the "simple end" is really discouraging. It's like building a car and having somebody crash it into a tree on the test drive.

Well in the disassembly/re-assembly PDF there are warnings. The very first one on top of page is "if you have trouble follwing instructions then hire a pro" Also, it specifically mentions connectors
22) Make sure all 6 connectors are plugged in so that all 4 pins are engaged in the connector, DOUBLE CHECK THIS. If you are off to one side and skip a pin it will blow the channel out on the CVA.
23) Unlike the VDM scan reversal connectors. The CVA connectors only go one way and cannot be installed upside down
24) Reconnect Ribbon cables
25) IF you have a 1995 to 97, reconnect the White ground wire to the Vertical board.
I think what's happened this week is it got darker outside and people are trying to re-assemble their machines in dark home theaters poor lighting or no lighting. Kal we will definitely need to add 1 or 2 more pics with big RED lines through incorrectly connected cables. With a Caption of "DON"T DO THIS"

Let-err rip. I've got big shoulders and you can't sway my opinion either
BTW, re-read Kals argument with my opinion and then re-read the original first post in this thread
