I like Linux for the same reason. It doesn't touch the drive unless I am doing something. Also it doesn't get the same "rot" over time that Windows does that said my HTPC is still Windows because Linux just isn't there for that function for me yet. |
I can't wait for the day we can do a one click Linux install that will find all the video capture cards, USB capture devices and proper video card driver and give us a nice front end so we can make a proper DVR with no DRM nonsense out of a PC using Linux without the Linux know how.
I don't mind playing in Linux I would just rather be watching/recording TV.

IMO that day will never happen...There are way to many variations of Linux and it's far to geeky to make things work perfect and simple. I have a little netbook that came with Linux, not too bad little distro but lacked some features. I wanted to run mono on it to play around with some app development. No luck, I had to put on another distro to get mono to work...Problem was then the wireless card was dead in the water and its a known issue.
If the Linux community could standardize on one distribution then it could give Windows a serious run...Until then it will not happen.
Chip...46 Processes really isn't too bad...I keep my Vista notebook very trim and it has 66 running, some of those are app development services. Two of my Windows 7 boxes, my ripper has around 60 running then my HTPC has about 52...It's very trim has almost nothing installed.

You run 98!! Wow, it looks antiquated even compared to some of the light linux distros.
I don't disagree about the level of one click install. I am not sure if that day will come or not. Honestly, the only trouble I have had is with video driver install. That can be a pain in the a$$. I am running Ubuntu and everything was pretty simple. Anandtech did a recent article about Linux and mentioned why the video driver install is difficult and will probably continue to be.

I realize you dislike Linux, but it is getting there. I would say it is like digital pjs. Good enough for everyday tasks. Most people if just introduced to PCs with no pre-conceived notions would probably be happy with Linux. Most of the complaints are from Windows users, who say it doesn't work like XP. Incidentally I think that was one of the problems with Vista. Heck, it is one of the reasons I prefer Gnome to KDE. If you flipped the taskbar to the bottom in Ubuntu, then it would probably take no more than half a hour for most XP users to get up to speed.
As for the many distros, I don't think there are as many as you might think. While there are a lot of them out there, most are derivatives of just a couple of main distros. A lot of the distros are people putting their own spin on Ubuntu, Debian, etc. I think as time goes on there will be just a few main distros that people use. With IBM, Intel, HP, and Google contributing to Linux, I can see Linux eroding some of the Windows base.

I do on my classic gaming box. There are a lot of older games that don't like XP. Plus the Gravis Phoenix requires DOS for programming. So you need to be in DOS mode.

Personally, I'd lay money on a virus(or virus's) and/or spyware.
Did you do a remote scan with Trend Micro "House Call" remote system scan ? Then do a boot time scan with your installed anti-virus, then do a root kit scan, then a scan with all the available spyware scanners, then, if its still slow, a scan with HijackThis is in order, and post the results at an online forum with memberships which will know how to interpret the results and advise you on how to clean your system of whatever is infecting it...
Personally, I've never had to go as far as the Hijack This scan, but it might be your best bet...
