The first one means the fan duct is missing, causing improper cooling and thus the burnt filter.

Hope everyone had a great christmas! - New Years Eve is now looming. Didn't have any time to play with this set for more than 6 weeks, til now...with all the christmas shopping and mayhem...yesterday one of my sons helped me remove the screen, I dug deep into the light engine and found my major / last problem. The super thin tinted mica filter in front of the blue LCD is badly damaged , sort of toasted looking with horizontal crazing. and of course I also found the air filter on the bottom of the light engine was plugged...the root cause.
Attached a couple of pictures... my headache now is trying to find one of these filters by itself. The service manual doesn't have a listing for this as a separate item that I could determine. Partstore and Vance Baldwin don't list anything I could clearly identify....other than UX22811 "panel filter assy".
Mac do you know if these are available anywhere, and if not, are all these filters tinted the same colour ? Then I could try my luck getting a dead light engine off the 'Bay and scavenging a replacement filter.
Cheers,
...Dave

Wow, that's.. gross!
I am in the middle of a steep learning curve on plasmas, Mac says LCDs are harder..
From the plasmas that I've seen here, LG makes a whole bunch, and while some parts are interchangeable, a bunch are not. Good luck, keep posting, I'm curious as to the progress.
Oh, and heat kills the plasmas quickfast too!

The correct part name is polarizer. And no they are not available. Your only option short of a rebuilt light engine is to find a used one.Thing is, this was a very common problem on these engines. The rebuilt replacement engines have been redesigned with multiple filters and a temp sensor to shut down the engine before it gets so hot that it melts the polarizers. Yours is probably an original with only 1 filter. So even if you find a used light engine, you would be gambling if it has good polarizers or not. You may want to check with a local TV repair shop to see if they have a used engine laying around that you can check for a good one. I'm pretty sure the polarizers are NOT the same for the 50V500, but you would have to verify. Other models may be the same, but not sure.
Most of the time though, the original was returned as a core for a rebuilt one so there may not be many laying around, unless a customer decided not to spend the money and just left the set there for parts.

These should be compatible models: 50VX500, 50C10

Thanks for the info, Mac! ...took the burned polarizer to Brighouse TV here in Richmond (one of the only repair shops left in this town). They had no old LE cores lying around, instead referred me to I.T. Electronics in burnaby (...closed for New Years, darn). Ever dealt with these guys, Curt ?
In the meantime, surfing around I found this fascinating 3M article re design of polarizers VS heat issues in light engine optics . Check out this link:

Will update on my search as it progresses ...

If you do end up finding a polarizer and get it running, there is an upgrade kit for the filtration system. Thats if they are still available. I can get you the kit numbers but you will have to search them out. Hmmmm, then again, I have a service account with Hitachi so I could check directly with them. Let me know.

Imre at IT and the guys at Brighouse are both good guys to deal with. Also try eBay, I've gotten all my plasma PC boards there for cheap.

Not having much luck finding a polarizer, however someone on Fleabay has one of the refurbished light engine UX22202DR for $219...claims its ok. With a $50 core refund I might go for it... could even re-sell the flex converter I bought to recover even more of the cost. Hmmmm .... what do you think, Mac ? Did you find any more info on the cooling upgrade kit ?
Thanks,
Dave

Incidentally Curt I did talk to Imre at I.T. electronics... in his words - "don't even bother trying to fix it"..."not worth it" ... in my experience even the rebuilt light engines are a P.O.S.- i sometimes go thru 3 rebuilts just to get one good one".
Sigh ! ... now what...

Welcome to the wonderful world of digital...........................
Thats why the last RP LCD that was given to me I pulled the chassis for parts and took a hammer to the rest of it so it would fit in the garbage can.
I still have that chassis so I'll take a look at the polarizers in it. Maybe you'll get lucky and they are the same.

Yep, there was a Samsung DLP RP set, a very shallow one at one of the places I get flat screens from. I saw a bunch of dirt marks around the vent holes at the bottom. The guy said that 'flames shot out of the back' and was quoted $1100 retail for the light engine. I passed on taking it home.

Hey Macgyver, Curt et al
Well, after close to a year of searching (mostly ebay), I lucked out and snagged one of the re-designed light engines off Ebay at a reasonable price ( $160 )...whilst enduring having this set cluttering up my electronics workshop ( took patience; I came close to giving up and e-wasting the whole mess a coupla times!).
This LE is dated 2008 and cooling is MUCH improved - gone is the stupid little single round intake grille / filter on the bottom that plugs up and caused overheating/damage, instead there are two large 1.25" x 4" air intakes in two places at the rear of the LE. I've put the set back together and I am blown away by how nice the image looks so far, even with a slight RGB convergence error I still need to correct (just wating for a remote to arrive so I can navigate the service menus). I might also install a small 12 volt muffin fan on the rear of the set to pump a bit outside air directly into the LE area, as I have seen someone else do.
Cheers and happy new year to all!
Dave

Hey Mac,
Do you happen to have an electronic copy of the 50V500A I2C (service menu) adjustment procedure you could email or PM me with ? I thought I had printed off a copy that I'd scrounged off the net but I can't seem to find it.
THanks,
Dave

I'm sure I do. Give me a little time to find it. I have to run out for the afternoon.

Hey mac - thanks again for the manuals - well, after messing around in the I2C / ADJUST and what not for awhile I cannot find any RGB convergence adjustment anywhere. Just the ghost adjustment which my LE didn't need any changes to. Am I missing something ?
My convergence is off between 3/64ths " and 1/8th " in a diagonal direction ( colour fringes above and to the left of white objects, plus below to the right) which isn't too bad from 10 feet away but really detracts from image quality in HD and I want to fix it whatever it takes after putting so much effort into the this set already.
Do you believe my only way out of this is to do a mechanical convergence in the optical block ... (?!).
[... insert scary music here ...]
Or could anything else cause this such as misalignment of one of the mirrors ? or is this "Chromatic Abberation" at play ?
Digging around on google i did not find any references to anyone attempting this on any LCD RPTV's, but quite a few about XGA / SXGA Boardroom projectors being tweaked this way. The prospect of tearing the set down again is daunting, and I am not sure how the LCD panels could be adjusted up or down successfully - I am certain the screen section has to be removed from the top of the set. I read one post about someone putting a telescope up against their PJ's Light engine output lens to see the image !???

When you did the ghost adjustment, did you get the different color screens with the black box in the middle?
