The point of the question at hand has changed from the cowsumer's ability to measure such marketed CR performance, to the ability of the manufacturers themselves being able to in order to safe harbor their arses from blatant lies.

Yeah I saw something on the digital forums over at AVS that said the Sony SXRD projector panels were possibly degrading and causing the contrast ratio to drop overtime or something? |
Ekkehart at Cine4home mentioned it, but I don't read his articles. None are in English and I don't like the translators. I am actually considering going ahead and buying it if it looks good. I could put a new lamp in it and get my money back. I have a friend that wants a pj that this would be perfect for.
I understand where you are going with that, but I think it would depend on the used digital. A lot of these low cost digitals are only getting a couple of thousand native on/off. I think the 4000 is in the same boat. Yes, the iris helps, but is no panacea. I think the RS1s are going for around $2k used. With a Lumagen to handle the color, one could get a better image than the LCDs.

This post reminds me of an Uncle I had that used to always say "I bought a color TV but it don't play none" and "Have you ever got shocked clear across the room?"
RIP Ron.
