One of mine died so after removing it from the CLM I opened it up to see whats inside. (Sorry guys, still the same rotten camera!)

Its just a CR2032 encased in clear plastic ( see http://www.renata.com/content/encapsulated/horizontal.php for exact specs on battery )! A longer lasting CR2477N is also available. Both these bare battery types can be had off EBay for far less that the Renata module. Farnells have the Renata branded CR2477 at £1.53, about $2.00 US.

Someone mentioned that they had changed the module on the CLM to a PCB battery holder (like the ones on a PC motherboard) and then just used a normal 3v battery (although Renata branded ones are available), this seems a more cost-effective solution and certainly will save time and hassle changing batteries - anyone any pictures and or suggested parts to be used for this mod?

PCB holder easy enough to obtain but may require modding to fit the CLM - just wondered if anyone had already done this?

EDIT Note - the CR2032 battery requires a 20mm holder, the CR2477 requires a 24mm holder. Having said that, given how the Renata module is constructed two bits of wire, some hot glue and the battery would probably do it!

Cool! I opened our Dell laptop battery as it died, and holy crap! THe stuff inside of it!!! Fuse, regulators, two SMT boards. Turns out the batteries themselves are fine, but the PC board died. Oh well, new batteries are $34 on eBay incl shipping, so no big deal.

What is the purpose of a battery on a Marquee?
How often should it be changed?
How do you know it is bad or going bad?

It keeps all your settings (convergence, color balance, geometry, input memory etc) stored on the CLM when the pj is switched off at the wall socket.

You change it when the voltage drops, hopefully BEFORE it loses all your settings. Easy to check, just pull out the CLM and put a multimeter to the pins on the underside of the board and it should read 3v, any less and it really needs to be changed. If you have ever re-initialized your 9500 then thats what happens when the battery runs out, you lose every setting you ever made to it.

Mine wasn't bad as such, I think it discharged itself, possibly when I took it out a while back and it was sitting on my desk - may have been sitting on something metallic that crossed the pins and slowly discharged itself, dunno.

Should last a good few years always worth checking say once a year or so.

Well, as luck would have it I spoke too soon. I unplugged my pj this morning to do some work on it, plugged it back in and the damn thing re-initialized! WTF!!!

I pulled the CLM and found that the new battery was down to 2.6v in just a couple of days.

Looks like I will be doing the mod sooner rather than later since that was my last Renata Module thats went t*ts up Evil or Very Mad

Something is pulling power out of the battery on of the CLM, thats 2 new batteries that have been sucked dry on me in just a few days, anyone any idea where to start looking for the culprit??

Edit - ok, just completed the pcb holder mod but there is definately something weird going on.

New battery quality CR2032 measured at 3.26v prior to installation

New battery installed, measured 1.14v across the pins on rear of CLM

New Battery removed, measured at 2.84v

WTF!!!!! What is going on here???

By way of comparison, the new Renata in my spare CLM reads 3.02v and has done for about the past 9 months!

Ok , Paul's problem is with the swapping of the ceramic buffering caps for U31 and U32 on the CLM. these are fed from the battery and looks like polarized caps wont work here.

I had the same issue on my one board and never got time to investigate, Pauls little discovery got me to go down and look at my CLM and probe around. I removed those tants and put back in the 100nf 50VDC ceramics and the battery has been stable for a half hour now so it looks good.

oh and I took apart a battery by chipping away the epoxy with a jewelers flat head screw driver, looks like we can use the case for our own battery if your careful chipping it away. just use the leads from a cap or resistor to go through the holes in the holder .

You're a genius Nash, many thanks for that, Thats two good Renata's and three normal CR2032's that I went through trying to figure out what was going wrong. Real puzzler. Well done!

You've dragged me out of the mire yet again my friend Thumbs Up

One benefit was that I went ahead with the "buy your own battery" mod;

Now I can get back to my magnets........ Shocked
