What DIY and what pro screen? I switched from Da-Lite Cinema Vision to a Wilsonart. Now granted, I didn't use both of the screens extensively with the same PJ, but I have to say, I'm not disappointed.

Dave I switched from DIY Goo painted to Draper M1300. The difference was not subtle. Colors, sharpness, light output all increased a great deal. Never tried Wislonart, although another thing I really like about the draper Onyx is the big 4" wide black velevet border on all sides that is angled in towards the screen. It really makes the projected image a nice crisp rectangle popping out from a dark wall.

I was never impressed with the Goo screens. Their gain is 1.0 despite his claims. The M1300 is actually very much like the Wilsonart IMO. Both have a gain about 1.25 and render colors similarly.

Yeah, my Da-Lite did not have the wide border, but when I built the DW screen I did a 4" triple black velevet border on casing that tapers just as you say. I do like that much more. I also did side masking panels (I'm running a 2.37:1 screen now) from the same black velvet and although it doesn't really improve the picture quality, it looks so much nicer as the blank parts of the screen do not have any of the (small amounts) of stray light illuminating it.

I switched from M1300 to white laminate and have to agree that those are very similar.
I also like hang in the air effect that my current black borders 2,5" behind screen surface made.
