I've been looking at AV receivers, and some of the higher end ones have pre-outs, and 7.1-channel analog direct input. I know the pre-outs would use the receiver as a pre-amp and allow you to use an external amp. I want to do the opposite. I want to use the receiver as an amp, and have a seperate preamp. Would the 7.1-channel analog direct input allow me to bypass the processing of the receiver and just use it for it's amps?

Typically yes, but it depends on what processing you mean. Check the manuals/specs o nthe receiver you're considering and see what sort of processing may or may not be applied to the 7.1 analog inputs.

that's funny, I just realized when I run my Pani BD-80 into my Denon with analog in and then pre-outs to a couple of mono-blocks for the mains the AVR is doing almost nothing. I say Almost because the volume knob is still being used, the surrounds and CC are still being powered by the deonon and level controls are still active. the last one is really important because seperate amps usually put out a lot more power and you will need to trim them down or overpower the other channels.
to answer your question yes it should work but if your source is a true pre-amp then some functions like volume, channel balance, and such might overlap between the 2 units. On my system other functions like digital sound processing of any kind are completely disabled.

I want to use a lexicon dc-2 processor, and was originally going to go with that and a separate amp. Now i'm thinking it would be more cost effective to use the lexicon with an av receiver and just bypass the amps processing. This is what it says in the manual about the direct analog inputs:

"6/8-Channel Direct Inputs: These jacks are used for connection to source devices such as DVD Audio or SACD players with discrete analog outputs. Depending on the source device in use, all eight jacks may be used, though in many cases only connections to the front left/right, center, surround left/right and LFE (subwoofer input) jacks will be used for standard
5.1 audio signals."

To me it sounds like the internal processing would be bypassed, but i'm not 100% sure.

Sounds like it. I would contact the manufacturer.
