We've got a Sony 400-CD player. It's not the greatest in the world but it's worked well for our needs -- until now. I just tried to play a disk on it and I discovered the "disk navigation" feature is hosed. It was at disk 382 and if I turn the "disk select" knob, I can only change the 1's digit. That is, I can change it from 382 to 389, then it wraps back to 380. I tried powering it off, no change. Tried pulling the power for a minute and powered it up, and then it would only go to 380-384 before wrapping. It's unplugged now, so I'll see if powering it off overnight makes any difference.
BTW it's definitely electronic, not mechanical. If you open the CD carousel door, the carousel rotates all the way around like it's supposed to. But you can't move it to any other disks outside the 38x range.
Any guesses how one might solve such a problem, or are the control circuits just zorched and it's only good for a boat anchor? Or at best a 5-CD player?

Hmm, no, I don't think it's a dirty control knob. It seems to work quite smoothly and reliably, and the CD # changes like it should, except it doesn't move outside the 38x range. I think it's in the control circuitry that specifies what disk to cue up.

I agree, it's in the CPU. Maybe Mac can chime in, but I'll bet it's not worth repair, it's an internal CPU glitch.

A couple things come to mind if the unplugging overnight doesn't help.
1: The unit has a group program function in which will only play discs of a preprogrammed group when selected. Now if you say you never programmed a group or anything else it still may have glitched and made groups so I would look in your manual and verify there are no groups or any other programming. If you find any, delete them all and see if it will function correctly.
2: Some of the multidisc players have a sensor that reads the carousel on turn on for what slots have discs and what slots dont. Now if the sensor is dirty it may not be reading any discs in any slots but only has the few slots you have available left in memory. If you have the remote, what happens if you enter a disc number other then the ones available with the jog dial and hit enter?

Aha!!! Mac, you nailed it. I must have bumped the "play only this program group" button. (*DUH*.) Not sure why it started out working on 380-389 and then worked on 380-384 after I pulled the power -- I figured that indicated a CPU problem -- but I turned off the "play this program group" button and now it works fine. Thanks!
