Just bought a new house and initially looked at the Marquee on the ceiling in the theater room and thought, "well, that is going to be the first thing to be replaced." Well, after spending quite a bit of this time on this site, I can say that I am most excited about the prospect of enjoying this monolithic piece of equipment and learning how to tinker with it. It is a 9000 I believe with a Rock scaler. I did figure out how to get it working and watched the beginning of Saving Private Ryan on the 120 inch screen and was floored, despite the fact that it needs obvious convergence help. I was wondering if anyone knows someone in the Raleigh/Durham area that is knowledgeable in these matters to give me a hand setting this thing up to maximize performance. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum, and we're glad you found us before taking it down! A 9000 will throw an excellent picture and once it's properly set up I'm sure you'll be very pleased. Hopefully someone local can lend a hand.

the 9000 with it's 9 inch tubes is a good machine. You might want to consider upgrading a few components to the newer 8500/9500 versions like the VIM (video input module), Control module, and possibly the 3 neck-boards. This will give you some added geometry controld, Blue gamma tracking, and overall better video performance. Check the FS Section, couple of guys on there parting out 8500's .
If you can't find someone local to help, I have an easy to follow "set-up guide for dummy's" that will help you grasp the basics. You can e-mail me through my HD mods page on this site , just click on my signature link

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I'm sure I'll have questions as I get more involved. My wife just can't understand why I am tinkering with the theater when so much else needs to be done with the move into the house. I am sure, though, that you folks do!

Darn rights we do!
'Honey, go move in the couch and loveseat while I work on this &*&%$ home theater.'
Do give us a shout if you run into issues. THe Marquee is pretty easy to work with, and you should really learn the beast yourself, as CRTers are far and few between. We can assist though, chances are you'll find someone close that can assist with some hands on demos.

Hold the applause....the projector is actually a 9500 LC. Duty calls, but I am sure to have questions and you folks have been most accomodating. Thank you.

That's even better. Next you'll tell us that it's an Ultra, and why are there two side by side?
Ask away, you've got a great setup there. You will probably want to add a Moome card or an HDFury to connect a BR player, but get used to the set first, and add later.

OK, I have my first set of questions. The projector is fed through a rock scaler which has been upgraded to a rock pro. This unit has a VGA input for HD bypass. Your thoughts on continuing to have this in the video stream vs. removing it entirely as I probably will be transitioning to HDMI for ease of use. To avoid fishing the hdmi cable, i was thinking about the moome ext fullhd and use my processor to switch inputs to the full hd. Right now, after trying to hook up direct TV to the scaler, I am having a tough time getting the whole feed to show on the screen. Additionally, even the marquee adjustment menus seem to be cut off on the top of the screen. I've tried to change the source size parameters, but the top image on the menus as well as dvds is still cut off. Would phase be the right parameter to adjust? Also, after reading the marquee manual, I see that there are different memory settings for various inputs. I assume I will have to do some adjustment there for dvd/bluray player vs. directv feed. that's a little beyond me right now. I'm in the process of getting an oppo bdp as well. So, in a roundabout way...
1. How do I get the full image from the marquee menus and dvd on the screen?
2. Keep the Rock Pro?
3. Transition to HDMI?
4. If so, go with the Ext FullHD box?
6. Oh, one more question if you would. Beside the fan noise on the marquee, there appears to be an electric clicking/snapping noice coming from the bottom (top of the unit, as it is ceiling mounted) when in operation that is rapid in frequency. It can only be heard when standing directly under the unit. Normal or service needed?
Thanks again for dealing with these newb questions.

Id get a moome internal HDMI card and use an HDMI switching receiver for each input. Much simpler set up.
1)Now for each new resolution you'll have to do a complete setup in a new memory block as the scan rates change as might the convergence and size of the image,
this is why you might not be able to get the entire image on the screen. 1080p will need custom timings usually to get the whole image to the screen side to side, this can only be done with a scaler or a HTPC that had BD drive.
2)you could keep the rock pro but id look for a better used scaler like a DVDO VP50 or a Lumagen HDP/HDQ.
3)The external HD , the HD fury, or the Vim-HD are your options, I like the Vim-HD with a lumagen scaler combo.
4) its up to you on this one
6) what side is the clicking comming from left or right front or back?

| sdwmd wrote: | | 1. How do I get the full image from the marquee menus and dvd on the screen?. | the internal menu's should always be fully visible. the menu's are centered on the active raster. You can't move them around with Phase because Phase only shifts external video within the raster. So 2 things, either the raster is not centered to the screen or the aspect ratio (AR) being projected is not correct to the screen AR. example, projecting a 4:3 raster on a 16:9 sctreen would result in chopped off menu's.

Thanks again for dealing with these newb questions. | It's a high voltage leak, it's not good for the machine al all. I bet if you look at the pprojected image you might see a very small jump or jitter that coincides with the ticking.

Your help is greatly appreciated. Above issues addressed. Now for another one if you would indulge me. I can't seem to get the marquee to change color/tint/detail/cont/brite. I can adjust these variables through the rock pro, just not with the marquee. The slide bars move, but the picture does not alter. BTW, the settings are not locked. Tried to do a quick Avia calibration without much success

When you use the RGB inputs, you bypass the color, tint and sharpness controls. That's the way the set is wired, as are all RGBHV projectors. THe brightness and contrast controls should still work, the rest of the adjustments need to be done at the source, or in the service menu in the G2 and drive controls.

Aha! By George I shall figure this out yet! No more silly questions for at least a week. I promise. Thanks Curt.

the ticking sound is a cause for concern, sounds like a small high voltage leak at one of the tubes. Been having some trouble myself with these lately.

Took off the HV splitter, rotated it as per service bulletin, cleaned off all the leads as well as the splitter, and all is now well:) Now just waiting for my moome card, my oppo bdp, my 886 processor, and my friend the isf calibrator to calibrate it (blacks are really crushed right now) and I'll be ready for a screenshot. Now that's dancing!

Crushed Blacks is actually normal for a CRT without gama boost. No amount if calibration without it will fix that but the Moome card will certainly do the trick for you.

It's not like you need to keep dumping money in it every year either. I have only spent a few hundred bucks last couple of years and I love my HT. Looks like your putting together a nice set-up Let us know how it turns out.
