THREAD BUMP!!!
OK, boys... We went to the midnight show of TRON: LEGACY last night... I've been waiting for over a year-and-a-half... I was admittedly worried it would be all action and effects and no story or acting, ala Transformers like Dave said... Well, no reason to have been worrying because they really made a hell of a movie. I'm admittedly a bit of a fan boy, but honestly it was a pretty good story with pretty good acting, and I even liked the ending!
It was rife with references to the old film - some even pretty overt. Added to the fun.
The visual treatment of this movie was way cool. The costumes, the colors... All awesome. Holy sh*t... The action sequences were super-cool, and the sound was incredible.
The music was really excellent, too... If you like cool electronic music mixed with a great cinematic orchestral score. I've heard the Daft Punk fans were disappointed because they expected more Daft Punk, but that would have been a mistake IMHO, anyway. The way they did it was perfect... It's a really cool score.
Oh, and for the theater geeks... We saw it in all its 2D 35mm glory in one of the last big theaters in my area... 800 seats or so and a 60-foot wide screen... Excellent mid-90's vintage THX surround system that was installed when THX certification really meant something. It's a single-screen theater, so they don't have to concern themselves with isolation with adjacent theaters, so it's probably running close to reference levels... and it was frickin' great.
We'll probably go try the 3D presentation after the holidays, but Ebert already bitched that it was too dim - which isn't a good thing for a movie as dark as this one is.
That reminds me... At least 2/3 of the film takes place either at night or in the computer - "on the grid" - which should make this an EXCELLENT movie to show off CRT blacks. If Disney does a good job with the transfer, this will definitely make great demo material.

Saw it this afternoon. excellent. the 3d was ok. It would've been good either way. Can't wait to see it in CRT glory!

Me, neither! It's one of those few movies that will look really stunning on some of our CRT setups, but not so much so on a lot of the cheap digitals with elevated black levels!

My guess is that the digitals will actually be able to SEE what is happening though.
I think I am a bit too young to have been caught up in the first go round of Tron so I haven't been following it much but it has been constantly showing up on the tech blogs so I am partially interested.
Can't wait for it to come out and give it a whirl.

So, I'm guessing it ain't gonna be out on BD for this Xmas. Still, my inability to tolerate other humans in person will force me to wait, and pay the man. Thanks for giving us the feedback, SC. I'll but the BD sight unseen.

Greg, are you not using any gamma correction? I may not be linear all the way down to black, but I have excellent blacks without losing much more than the very bottom. I have no problem seeing into the shadows and still having near full black.
You should rent or borrow or torrent the old movie. It's amazing stuff considering it was made before most PCs even had much for graphics capability. Definitely try to watch it before you see the new one - there a lot of subtle references to the old movie and of course the whole premise of the new movie is based on what happened in the old one.

Wan, I hate the crowds, too... I won't deal with it. I hate the obnoxious that are inevitably part of a crowd. I got luck in that we went to an old theater in the old part of town, so there weren't many people. I'd say around 50 or 60 people in an 800-seat theater... It was like a private screening!
The flip side would have been going to the cinemark at the new mall in the burbs to see it in 3d. I'm sure the masses were packed in there like sardines.
Perhaps there's an older theater running film somewhere you could get into without rubbing shoulders with the unwashed masses.
Oh, and yes - I will be buying the BD the day it comes out.

With proper gamma correction, a good CRT projector will reveal all that there is to see. It will give up NOTHING in dark
level detail resolving power to any digital projector, while presenting blacks that are actually black.
If your projector crushes blacks, there is no reason for that to be the case, not in this day and age when many products
are available to adjust your gamma settings to compensate.

I have a kimcoder with gamma. That is my point though...you NEED a device to see the detail...many with CRT probably don't have that. That probably doesn't include people who would read this post.

... gamma correction aside,
I just watch the movie and really enjoyed it. I was concerned they'd pull a Star Wars episode 1, but thank goodness that didn't happen.
The story was good, and there was enough background to be a stand-along movie. Overall, I really enjoyed it.
...Well, I suppose there could have been more chicks in those ...nice... outfits.

She was on Jay Leno last week. Funny when she brought out her Irish accent (Irish on the dad side). I enjoyed the House M.D. episode called Lucky 13.

Sorry dumb ass joke, but really, you see that hot chick, with that spelling, and you're thinking about proper pronunciation?
Not me. Juvenile, perhaps, but wouldn't you think she changed her name for that very reason?
