Anybody seen the TRON Legacy VFX concept trailer, yet? Holy sheep sh*t, I'm excited for this film. If it's anywhere near as good as the original, combined with today's stunning CG, this will be a KILLER film and Blu-ray. Can you say LOTS and LOTS of deep blacks?
http://www.apple.com/trailers/disney/tronlegacy/
Downloaded the trailer last night and watched in the theater... Gorgeous. Sound is only stereo, but it sounds pretty good.
TRON was one of my favorite childhood movies. I haven't been this excited to see a film in years. It's not out until next summer, though. Whaaaaa...

[quote="ecrabb"]In the arcade? I loved the arcade game! Very cool.
Here's some stills of the concept art, apparently just from ComicCon last week.

Contrary to popular belief, there were a few good Mac games back in the day (and many more now). Plus, I think gaming was already pretty vibrant on the Apple II when the PC was still running VisiCalc and WordStar under MS-DOS!
I never have been much of a gamer, though. I gamed a little WAY back in the day as a pre-teen... I'm talking early 80's Sierra Online and the like... But, it wasn't long and I got interested in bikes, then cars, motorcycles, girls, drinking, college... Life... I've never really gotten back into it. I did take "smoke breaks"and play network Descent on the PCs in an office I worked in with 6 or 8 other guys about 10 years ago - that was fun.
These days, I love the occasional session of Halo 3 or a few races in GT5... I love it when I play - there's just SO many things I'd rather be doing... Creating something, making something, tinkering, or if none of those, watching a movie. I can barely keep up with movies the way it is.
Plus, I have one of those addictive personalities, which is bad playing games... I keep saying, "Damn, just one more game/try/shot!" right up until the sun starts coming up. Can't afford to do that crap anymore!

Man, look at these stills from the VFX trailer. I LOVE the visual treatment. It stays true the old, but it has a really fresh, new, glassy feel to it. Man, they really nailed the look, I think. Gorgeous! Can you tell I'm excited?

A simple no would have sufficed.

Greetings, programs!
TRON had some incredibly cheezy lines in it, but I loved it anyway. If I remember right it was the very first movie with any significant amount of CGI in it. Most of the movie was just the weird dark rotoscoped stuff, but all the light cycles, tanks, etc were CGI. Looks incredibly crude now but it was mind-bending at the time.

Hey if not for rotoscope we wouldn't have lightsabres. I liked the effects too

I'm crossing my fingers not, Dave.

Oh, man - I loved the rotoscoped stuff, too. It was an amazing look for the time. Yeah, there were "only" about 20 minutes of CG shots, but that was definitely groundbreaking in those days. A couple of those guys went on to do some great things. One of them founded Wavefront (later Alias|Wavefront, eventually Maya) fame. Those CG shots were just amazing. The tanks and recognizers... Wow! And the sound design along with it... Recognizers... Absolutely amazing stuff.
Yes, it was a cheesy Disney movie at certain points, but the concept and execution were awesome for the time. I hope this new film eliminates some of the cheese... Think, TRON meets the first Matrix... but, without Keanu Reeves.
END OF LINE

Way back in 1986, I spent 40 hours repairing an Ampro projector. It was actually an Aquaray, the predecessor of Ampro. I finally found the intermittent problem with it, and as a reward, I asked my boss if I could take home the projector for the weekend to 'test run' it. He OKed it.
I tweaked it on an off white wall in my g/f's apartment, went out and rented TRON. AWESOME, even without proper surround sound.

So, you watched in in 480i, or did your boss let you take a scaler to scale up the crappy VHS. In either case, not sure I'd call it awesome.

All the sets would do in 1986 is 480i via composite. Plastic TAC lenses to boot. high end stuff, $12K cost back in the day. I still have two Rays here, I really should get one up and running. Between tse and myself, I'm sure I can nail it.

Wow, 1986. That's a year before Monsters of Rock tour.
