I've recently pulled out and hooked up my cheap a$$ turntable and have been listening to some vinyl again. This has raised my interest in picking up something a bit better.
I know there are probably better places to ask about something like this, but everywhere else I looked this topic just turns into one large pissing match.
So, to start off I am a cheap bastard and definitely would be looking in the $500 or less range (prefer the less part) and used is not an issue.
Two that seem to keep popping up are the Technics SL-1200 (I personally like the "built like a tank" aspects of this one) and the Rega P2.
I'm guessing this is one that draganm should pop his head into pretty quickly

I think the cartridge is at least as important, but either of those TT are safe bets. keep your eyes open in audio used forums locally- I know someone that picked up a VERY nice Empire for under 100$ this way.

I have used the rega, i have sold the rega, Its a good table. Pair it with a Grado Blue 1 or red 1, and you've got a kicking setup!

Rega tables are OK, don't expect much from a P2 or P3 though. MDF or glass platter, MDF plynth with the motor and tonearm bolted directly to it, no de-coupling. The best thing on a Rega table is the tonearm, I actually like "Rega cartridges much better then their entry level tables.
Personally, I would look for a vintage Thorens in good shape, like this one on CR

See if you can find an old Oracle tripod table, can't rmemeber the model number, but i had one back in the late 80s and they are great tables. The old Thorens TD series were okay but not in the same league. There were numerour good arms and cartridges, which ones were better is a toss up.

I looked at few of these on Audiogon. While they are beautiful & impressive looking, my guess is none of that makes it play records better. I always thought the Thorens tables were well designed and a good value.

from the vinyl forum i read, the regas consistently get recommended. and they are indeed a nice table, i had a friend feeding one into a ConradJohnson pre/power combo and then out of BIG tannoys. good sound.
FWIW i have a Linn LP12 and an Oracle. and i'm pretty darn close to ditching the Oracle. just too fiddly and there is no company support. getting a replacement belt (or even an email answer) can take months. Don't go with an Oracle unless you have a good support dealer nearby.

the Rega's are certainly not bad tablesw, if you can get a P9,P5, or even P25 they're quite good.
Like I said before even on the cheaper tables the RB250 tonearm is the best part and it's infinitely upgradeable. It's like a vinyl version of the Marquee projector  On my friends custom built table I wound up taking the stock RB250 and replacing the hollow plastic counterweight stub with a precision machined Brass stub, then machining a Titanium counterweight to re-establish the the correct balance. This eliminates the problem of the hollow plastic stub has of acting as a "resonator" on the back of the toneram and putting that noise back into the cartridge. Along with the Origin Live toneram re-wire and elimination of the 3 solder joints, it made a really nice difference to sound quality.

I have a Linn Sondeck too, I heard it's juts an VERY expensive copy of the Thorens 145  If it wasn't all dialed in and set-up I would sell it, get a TD-145, and pocket the $1K difference

that TT gets mentioned in the vinyl forum occasionally. usually along with "name one TT that you'd never own"  i was in a local audiofool store last month, a very McIntosh store with whacks of TTs kicking around. i asked about the MT10 and they said that they never brought that one in.

no kidding, looks like a "me too" . Just because vinyl is semi-popular again is no reason to take some old chassis's you had lying around and stick a platter and toneram on them

I think that Mac is trying to satisfy it's enthusiasts. They aren't planning to sell a million of these.

I just recently got back into vinyl and purchased a P3 and picked up a orfolson red cart. all for around $450
It sounds pretty good though I think a Benz MC20E2 is a better match for the RB300 arm.
If you want a new one. Pro-ject apparently is a great entry level turntable. My local stereo store says they are a huge seller at their place and they sound comparable to a P3.

I've got a Lenco L75, a Beogram 1200, and a Technics (Might be an SL-1200 but I'm not sure). The Lenco and the Beogram are in near-perfect condition aside from the covers being broken (!@$$) and I'm not sure about the state of the cartridges since they've been moved so much. I inherited both from my grandfather and haven't started them up, but he was a vinyl nut so they're probably in pretty good shape. If you're interested in one of them I could check them out and see what condition they're in...
