What benifts does Window 7 have over XP?

I'm running XP all over the house and don't want to trade some minor head aches for new ones, or bigger ones.

Is there a benefit for P4 intel machines?

Yes! Ordering it from Amazon through these links helps support the forum. (Sorry - couldn't resist!) Smile

Well it looks like Microsoft's finally ready to get rid of the mess that was Vista with the upcoming release of Windows 7.
You can help support the forum by pre-ordering through this link, and save 50% or more to boot (the Home Premium Edition upgrade is 58% off for only $49 - not bad!).

For day to day internet browsing and MS Office apps I think is advantages would be arguable. IMO the real advantages come with multi-media applications. I would also not consider it unless you have 2 GB ram minimum.

I have taken the plunge and could not be happier. I have now installed it on the HTPC, My gaming machine, my server, the family(common) computer, the laptop in the kitchen that is connected to a receiver to play mp3s from the server and stream XM radio on the deck and kitchen, AND the wife's PC is next.

Now It takes about 30 minutes from start to finish, it finds 90% of the hardware during setup. If you do the main or server first, and set the " Home network " up and then leave that machine on,you get a password and setup all the sharing on each machine in setup and takes about 3 minutes. Enter password decide what you want to share and click OK.

My original setup was all XP ( I hate Vista) and windows server 2003 (on the server ). I have already saved myself a TON on troubleshooting network issues since the upgrade, its almost fool proof. Fire and forget. And to give you some background I am a MCSE certified Tech .

So my suggestion is rock it out on a machine and try it. BACK UP EVERYTHING, then format and reinstall. I know they probably need a fresh install any way Smile ohh and as far as speed 20% across the board improvement in speed and response even (espescially) on a 1600 mhz (but vista ready) laptop.

There, hope that helps, remember YMMV as this is microsoft stuff, but no 2 machines I have are the same so its a broad selection of new and old hardware.

Good Luck

This is why Windows deserves a lot of the bashing regarding not being user friendly!

Pretty ridiculous!

Really Greg it is somewhat simple, except I don't know what the hell Vista Starter is, I'll Google it and find out. A 32 Bit OS cannot replace a 64 bit without a custom install and vis versa, and you cannot downgrade without a custom install. It kind of makes sence, however the chart is very intimidating.

Edit:
Windows Vista Starter was designed specifically to help more men, women, and children in developing technology markets learn valuable computer skills and reach new opportunities. With the goal of addressing digital divide challenges around the world, Windows Vista Starter is the most affordable edition in the Windows Vista line-up.

The confusing part is HOW MANY versions there are. How is my G-MA supposed to know which version she has? That would force her to right click on my computer and select properties...she would have to know what a mouse is!!!!

We went over that with SC in another thread...He had to put tape over his eyes to keep his head from exploding...There is actually many more, all versions are also available in an OEM version.

AND I guess they have followed the Apple lead and have a family pack. And no...I'm not joking.

The family pack is an excellent idea. How many people have multiple machines in the same house, but won't upgrade one because they want to keep them all the same, but don't want to spend $XXX * N machines? The family pack solves that. One low price, bada bing!

I see they're also down to 3 version of Windows 7 from 4 versions of Vista. Two versions of XP was dumb enough; I couldn't believe it when they went to FOUR for Vista. WTF are they thinking? If they do cut out a version again for each the next two major versions of Windows, when they release Windows 9, they'll have figured out what Apple was smart enough to realize 7 years ago: That there's no reason for multiple (crippled) versions of an operating system. It creates more problems than it solves. It's a pain in the for VARs, retailers, support staff, end users, and developers... and it's confusing for EVERYBODY.

They are subscribing to the "Seniors Discount" marketing strategy. Individual users have fewer high-end computing needs but also have less money to spend. Businesses have specific high-end needs in regards to network capabilities and more money to spend. They are trying to stick it to the businesses that have more money and appeal to the masses who have less.

2nd Disclaimer - The preceding post was made from a Vista machine. Please disregard any spelliing mistakes that my Mac would have flagged. Very Happy

No, I know WHY they do it, I'm just disputing whether selling the "cheap" low-end crippled versions really causes more problems, confusion, ill will, etc. than the additional revenue generated by the "high-end" non-crippled version. I mean, this isn't a car with power windows, locks, and moonroof. Options are good. A bunch of confusing, difficult-to-differentiate versions of the same thing is NOT.

What you just described would make a case for "Home" and "Professional"... Which, I can almost accept. But, who the f*ck thought would be a good idea to have FOUR different versions of the SAME operating system.

Two versions = silly, but I can see the logic.
Three versions = Confusing. Unnecessary. Pretty dumb.
Four versions = Baffling. WTF? Remarkably stupid.
