And continues "we're out of site of land, with no engine, no F'ing clue where we are, and the anchor rope does not touch bottom."
Drunkin idiot neighbor and his brother wanted me to drop my boat in the water and race out to SOMEWHERE to save his silly ass. My boat has a suspect water pump and has not been sea trial'd yet this year, so I told him to call Sea Tow and take it like a man.
A passing ferry was able to tell them their lat/lon, and the Coast Guard dispatched Sea Tow. Lacking cash, I met them at the harbor... FIVE HUNDRED FU@KING DOLLARS for a two hour tow.
No tow insurance.
No liability insurance.
No GPS.
MY BORROWED HANDHELD VHF and a cell phone to call for help.
Yes, I paid to save my silly-ass neighbor (the same neighbor, incidentally, who I gifted a complete HD HT in their oversized pool house.)

I have a neighbor who helps me out just as much I help him, that's cool. When yuor contsantly giving and the other person starts to expect it then that'scrap. It sounds like you're being used for your generosity. I hope the 500 was a loan and not a gift?

There's an old saying "if you want to dance you have to pay the band".
Owning a boat can cost a lot of money.

No doubt, with this crowd. And, among my friends, I'm the Professor
Right now we're in the "don't tell my wife" holding pattern.

If either the man or his wife were honest that big-block split window would have been mine 10 years ago!

I thought you told me it was a 1966 roadster that used to have a 427 ci. The Split window coupe was only available in 1963 and in a small block version. The coupe was available through 1967 but not "split window". In any event, as it no longer has the original "numbers matching" engine, it's cherry has been popped. It will never be worth top dollar, even with a frame-off resto.
Didn't you tell me that it's been sitting in his garage since the 70's without a motor? Even if he got a motor for free, he'd still have to spend thousands on it just to make it a driver without restoration. Thousands just on the braking system alone. All 4- four piston calipers along with the master will be frozen, the rotors will be junk. All of the steel and rubber brake lines will be junk along with the emergency brake system. It would be interesting to take my ultra-sonic tester and check the frame at its known problem areas. If that were mine, the very first thing I would do is lift the body off the chassis and inspect the frame. It's been in that damp garage for almost 40 years. You can get a body off a C2 vette chassis in about 4 hours if the body mount bolts come out.
I wish he'd get off his arse and do something with it. It's killing me knowing it's in there and never going to be done.

So I went over to Heywoods today to use his meter to check some surface mount caps. When we were done, we walked across the street to see that Vette. Thought I was gonna puke. Not only missing the engine but in general, a basket case.
The front wheels are off down to the spindles. The differential has been removed and partially disassembled all over the floor. I'm not even sure if all the parts are there to make it a rolling chassis. It's been a basket case for years. The ring and pinion gears are all rusty. I would be willing to bet that it would take 8-10K to put it back together not counting the engine. I never even looked at the inside.

Yep... It's 66 not a split-window. It IS a convertible with removable hardtop. It's been on stands since 1978 when they moved into my neighborhood, and was on its' second engine then.
His brother (the navigation genius responsible for the start of this tread) built a 327 to drop in it, but it'll never see the road.
Speaking of Magellan, that's him standing up with the sh!t eating grin.

That picture is great. You should print it out VISA "priceless" style and give it to him. Something like:
Taking a call from your dipshit neighbor and telling him to call Sea Tow - FREE
Cash Loan to pay Sea Tow to retrieve dipshit neighbor - $500
Driving to Marina to deliver cash - $5
Photograph of dipshit neighbor being towed into the marina - PRICELESS
Oh, or how about just, "BOATING FAIL!"

So SEA TOW is like AAA or CAA for cars? Great idea!
Too bad about that 'Vette. It'd be fun to use after market brakes, rear end, crate engine etc... just to make it a driver.

You could drop the "C" and be real close to the issue at hand.
As far as the Vette goes, the body looks intact from what I could see. You would have to get it for such short money to even consider it. However, it's my understanding that he thinks he's sitting on a pile-o-gold.

My friends brother sat on his '69 Firebird convertible for so long it's rotted into the drive way. He use to say it was worth way too much to sell.
I know the type.

Thats like a 68 Mustang convertible I ended up with some years ago. When I got it (for almost nothing) you could push up and down on the trunk about 12 inches and the front of the car just sat there. Rust was not its friend....
