DVE has pink-noise signals to set the level of all speakers. But it has both band-limited pink noise (about 100Hz and up) and full-range pink noise. Which should you use to set your non-subwoofer speakers? The full-range signals read about 4dB higher than the band-limited in my system. If I use band-limited, I'll end up setting my speakers 4dB louder in relationship to my sub than if I use full-range. Which is right?

And BTW I really **HATE** DVE's navigation!!!! Unless you have a chapter listing and go to the proper title/chapter, you can wander around in that mess for hours before you stumble across the link to the test patterns & audio tests. Grumble.

Gary I guess it depends on what range your speakers can handle, and what you set your crossover for on your subs. I would use full range with the sub on while setting the speakers.

And I agree with the DVE menu on the BD disc but the old SD DVD was much much worse.

Well the fronts are rated down to 65Hz and I have the crossover set at 80Hz. But I don't think that affects the basic question: do I use the signal that causes the front/surround/rear speakers to be 4dB louder, or 4dB softer, compared to the sub? My inclination is to use the one (full range) that sets them softer, otherwise the sub is going to be much too quiet. But that's not a very scientific solution.

That's why I **LOVE** the GetGray calibration disc... it's easy to navigate, only has what you really need to run HCFR, and the primary/secondary colors appear in the correct sequence as what HCFR requires in it's nearly automatic CIE and grayscale routines.

It's a winner. Downside is that there is no Blu-Ray version, as of my last check a year or so ago... but, you can still "upscale" it as a regular DVD colorspace through your standard DVD player... still gave me a great calibration with HCFR and the Spyder 2 on my HLS-6187.

If you really have to have the HD colorspace, you may be stuck with the DVE-BR disc. The menu layout was designed by a moron, or committee, or a committee of morons!

The free AVS HD 709 software is available here, too... but I've yet to use it (but looking forward to it!)

Definitely use the band-limited pink noise to set levels, Gary.

You can use the full-range pink noise if you'd like, but you should temporarily disable your sub while you take your readings. Even then, the readings will be less accurate than if you use the band-limited pink noise.

As for matching the sub, you really can't use a simple SPL meter to set the sub because the subs broad-band SPL is going to be all over the place depending on where you place the mic. You can set it for the main listening position just the same as the mains, but consider that the meter will read low or high if there happens to be a node or null or two in the listening position.

Just set your mains using the band-limited pink noise, then use the meter to get the sub in the ballpark from the listening position. Once you've done that, tweak/tailor the sub to suit from all your listening positions. That's all you can really do if you don't want to go the full-on REW/EQ and bass-trap/room tuning route to try to treat individual nodes and nulls.

PS - Oh, and get the BD version of DVE - It sucks WAY less than the DVD version.

I refuse to get the BD DVE. I've already given them far too much $$ for such a crappy POS test disk. I only use it for test tones to set my speaker levels. For everything else I use GetGray and AVCHD.
