No joy. I've tried all the reset options in the system menu with no change. I think I have a genuine hardware failure, not a firmware lockup that can be fixed with a reset.

**SIGH**. Guess it's time to bend over and cough up $150 to Sony. Grrrr.

When my PS3 bit the big one it was working great as I had just watched the kids DVD and then put in a BR disc and it said the FW needed to be updated, so I updated and nothing worked after that. On every site I could find they all said it was the drive. So I sent it in and the paperwork that came back with it said the drive was replaced. Seemed kind of odd to me that all of a sudden the drive just went south after the FW update but not alot I could do about it at the time as it was still under warranty. And beleive me I tryed everything to get it going again, short of ripping it all apart.

So bend over and take the Sony medicine.

Yeah, there seem to be a whole slew of different failure modes for this Sony POS. Some of them are firmware-related, like yours, and for (some of?) those the reset options seem to fix the problem.

That's not what happened to me. After reading horror stories about upgrade problems last year, I haven't been in a big hurry to upgrade the firmware. I hadn't upgraded in at least 6 months. I was in the middle of watching a BD movie when the playback suddenly froze. After that I got it to recognize a few disks but it barfed with an error when it tried to play them. That lasted for a few minutes and then it just quit recognizing disks at all.

So I don't think it's anything related to firmware. It smells like a hardware failure to me. So grab your ankles boys, and "Please Mr. Sony may I have another!!!"

What can one say. It's not that I don't like Sony products, well at least the older generations which I have a number of different products, 3 trinitron TVs and a ES cd player and they seem to just keep going. Well one TV needed a new PS chip in it but that was easy to fix and hasn't failed again.

But these PS3 failures is another thing, they just keep happening, is it because there are so many of them and they are in the public eye more than other products or is it just because they do break down more often period.

A happy ending!

I chewed out Sony's customer service people ("even *Microsoft* had enough integrity to fix Xbox360's for free when it became clear it was a defective product" Smile) and an agent intervened. He denied that this is a common failure (try looking in the Playstation forums, chucko) but "since you're so recently out of warranty I will waive the service fee as a one-time gesture of goodwill."

So my opinion of Sony is improved. That doesn't mean it's good. Smile

Hmm... Sounds like it might be time to take a small hit and sell it on craigslist and then buy another with a new one-year warranty. Wink

Damn these companies. At least they made it right... This time.

Now I'll be waiting for when mine dies!

Interesting idea! But the current going price for 40GB machines seems to be in the mid $200's, and the standard new model is the 80GB for $399. So the "small hit" would end up costing as much as a $149 service fee... Rolling Eyes Smile

H3ll no its not improved. You had to get into an argument in order to get basic GOOD customer service.

In this day and age in which we reward children for doing the bare minimum, corporations try just of little to get away with doing nothing and expect customers to give them great head.

I say hurt them. Go buy a dozen PS3, break them, and then return them. Razz

Yes. But they DID do the right thing, this time, after being shamed into it. So my opinion is better than if they hadn't. And like I said, that doesn't mean I think they're great. They're just better than if they had said "tough beans chump, cough up the $149." (Which is what they say if you don't cause a stink.)

I am all about customer service. Last two results of someone doing feedback on me were perfect scores. Those internal customers did not have to beg or shame me into doing my job of the right customer service thing. Its atrocious in this day in age you must beg someone into doing what shouldn't have to be asked.

But Sony is on losing ground these days. There is competition all over the place attacking them on every front. Matched with poor business philosophy and driving the once bitten, twice shy customer handling, they will see their days numbered.

I agree. Part of my message shaming them into fixing it said "These are your golden geese -- the people who are willing and able to cough up $400+ for a game console. Alienate them, and you will be in big trouble in the future. A lot of them are already saying they'll never buy another Sony product."

Oh, woops. I missed that you had a 40GB. I have an 80GB, and figure I could sell it for maybe $50 or so less than a new 80GB model... Which might not be a bad idea if I think there's going to be an impending failure...

I've actually used some of the features of the 80GB model... SACD, flash slots, and extra USB ports.

Oh, and as for the customer service... I think they set it up just like rebates. Put in rules that most folks won't jump through. Most will just throw the old one away and go buy a new one... What would you do with the $300 worth of games and controllers, etc. if you didn't? Then, the folks that are willing to jump through a hoop or two and make a stink, you give those people what they want.

To be honest, you probably didn't "convince" them of anything, Gary. On day 1 of CSR training, they're probably told, "If a customer that's X weeks outside their warranty period is unhappy and calling to complain, comp them the repair."

It's all about maximizing profit.

Now, what will be interesting is what you get back. I have a friend who sent in his 6-mo old pristine (but non-working) PS3, and got back a PS3 that looked like it had been drug behind a truck to his house. So, when you send in for a repair, S.O.P. is to just send you a refurbed replacement. He called back and said, "WTF? I sent in a perfect, pristine, like-new PS3, and I get back a POS junker." To Sony's credit, they cross-shipped a brand new one for his trouble.

But, that's the kind of sh*t that bugs the crap out of me. It's like the people running these organizations don't have a clue what people like and dislike. Haven't they ever bought anything themselves? If I were running the service center, I'd have a couple of cosmetic categories - ratings - say A through F or something - and I'd try to send people back something similar to what they had. If I received a pristine one, I'd send a pristine one back. If I received a POS, I'd send a (working) POS back.

Probably so. Squeaky wheel & all that.

Hmmm! Maybe they'll send ME a POS junker too!! Laughing

Except the new 80gig's are missing those exact features. IE, they're 40gig units with an 80gig HD.
