it might be because the 83 is a playback machine and not a streaming machine. the PS3 streams as a side bonus from it's online gaming capabilities. that is, it's designed to read a digital stream from the internet (game) so why not make a path from that to the dac already in there and provide mp3 streaming from sites like pandora?

you can get a squeezebox to do the pandora streaming.

NEW! The less expensive BDP-80 is also now available:

Purchase Oppo BDP-80:

NEW LOWER COST OPPO BDP-80! The New Oppo BDP-80 is now available as well. It's a 'light' version of the BDP-83. It still features BD-Live compatibility, DVD-Audio and SACD playback but drops the ABT2010 video processor, aluminum faceplate and some of the audio capabilities of the big brother BDP-83. Other items sliced to get the price down to $289 from $499 are IR in/out, RS-232 control interfaces, and a backlit remote.

I guess the PS3 spoiled me to expect streaming from a disc player.

From what I've read, the BDP-80 should offer the same blu-ray video/audio performance. It is very rare I would watch a DVD on the G90 so the lower upscale performance isn't really an issue but the plastic front is hard to take.

I really hope I don't buy the 83 and then next week Oppo comes out with the BDP-83s or something that has streaming and at a lower price to boot.

Update: The deed is done. Ordered from Amazon via Curt Palme.

Same here. Seems that everybody has gone to the model where you can't get anything with an aluminum face on it for less than $400-500... It's like a "premium" feature now to have a metal faceplate.

It's not just Oppo, of course... All the players out there for $200-350 all seem to look like plastic-y junk... Samsung, LG, Toshiba, Panasonic... It it's under $400, it's plastic. The Pioneer BDP-320 looks pretty nice (in spite of the plastic), but I don't know if it's any good. Wish I could get the Oppo 80 in a Denon-style case.
