They ere using a CRT projector at the movies yesterday, it was as clear as nothing ever I have seen before... the projector appear bulky like the size of a conventional CRT ..... is this digital with crt size only? Just so I know....

It was able to transmit 3 to 4 images at once, but the crt bulbs were horizontal, in other words, one on top of each other, not beside each other like our CRT units......

Let me know if you have seeing it also guys !!!!

Dolby and Barco premiere Ice Age 3: Dawn of the dinosaurs in 3D

Barco, a global leader in digital cinema technology, is pleased to announce the 3D premiere of Ice Age 3: Dawn of the dinosaurs. On Tuesday 23 June, Cinema Expo International visitors in the RAI Amsterdam will see the new adventures of Manny and his friends on a Barco twin projector setup with Dolby® 3D for large screens.

This summer the Ice Age crew is going for its third adventure. The first 3D Ice Age movie will have its premiere on Tuesday 23 June, during the Cinema Expo International convention and trade show in Amsterdam. For this occasion, Barco delivers two DP-3000 ultra bright digital cinema projectors with a Dolby 3D solution for large screens, provided by Dolby Laboratories, Inc.

You probably just saw stacked digital projectors... one polarized for left eye, one for right, one for regular mono (for previews).

No way in hell it was CRT. It does demonstrate the placebo effect nicely, though...

All I wanted to say is that I was really impressed by the Quality of the image, it was the most perfect projection of 3D that I have ever seen, I been in Dysney World Orlando before, well, let me tell you Dysney 3D projection in Orlando was a 4 compared to this one, I would give it a 10 out 10...

So, I am not sure if they are using the same projector all over the planet, but it was really bulky (again CRT style) but only white ligths were coming out of it.... they charge me $45 bucks for the 4 family members,,,,so I was not happy...but believe me... I was happy and impressed at the end of the movie....

WOW !!!! that is all I can say.... wow !!!

All cinema projectors are bulky, including dCinema projectos. In fact, most of them make CRT projectors look small. It takes a huge lamp and a great big lamphouse with lots of air moving through it to work reliably for hours on end and light up a huge screen to decent levels. Then, you need two of them for stereo 3d, and like Clarence said, probably a third for pre-feature ads and trailers. Talk about bulky!

That's great that you enjoyed the quality of the projected image. I think for awhile, most dCinema was a step backward in terms of pure image quality, but was obviously a huge convenience and advantage for everything else. Now, I think the image quality is catchup to, and even surpassing most of your average 35mm film prints - especially given how they are made and handled most of the time.

Cool. I'll have to try to catch that somewhere.

What style of glasses did you have to wear?

I took my kids to see "Up" in 3D last week. It was great 3D. So were all the 3D previews... including the Ice Age movie and some hamster movie. We also saw "Bolt" in 3D several months ago... again great 3D. All wearing the Buddy Holly polarized BCGs.

We had to pay a $3+ surcharge for the glasses. They had a recycle box at the exit. Our neighbors brought their glasses to the next 3D movie, but they still had to pay the 3D surcharge again.

I must be missing something. I saw the 3D "Monsters vs Aliens" and I thought it was just gimmicky and if anything distracted from the movie. I won't be seeking out any 3D movies in the future -- I'd rather wait and see them in my HT.

Heh heh heh... I LOVE that nickname... Found out what it meant when I started working with some military guys years ago. Hilarious!

I have no idea for certain, but I'd guess the $3 surcharge isn't for the glasses themselves, but to cover the overhead of the dual projector setup, maintenance, licensing, etc. They have additional costs to screen in 3D, so they're passing it along. Is the price the same as other features in that theater otherwise, i.e. $9 for Bolt on a normal screen, $12 for Bolt in 3D?

It's been a long time since I've seen anything in 3D, so I'll withhold judgement for now. But, that's the general feeling I got last time I watched a 3D feature... I can't even remember what it was, but I mostly just wanted to take the damn glasses off and watch the movie normally.

I'll have to go catch one of the new movies in 3D w/digital projection just to see if I like it or not.

Based on my experience with Dreamworks CG flicks, anything that distracted from the movie would be welcome...

To be fair, "Ants" was a way better movie than "A bug's Life" but that was an awful long time ago.
