|
|
Just picked up the Barco 800 in what seems pristine condition.
When started it goes directly to standby and couldn't get out with wired remote though controller did register the command. Remote light does turn on.
I shut down and switched dip switch 4 on bank 2 to on(power on to on mode instead of standby) Plugged back in still went directly to standby. No LOGO screen either. Stand by light turns on and processor light seems to flash normally.( On controller board.)
Password lock is off.
Projector has sat for 3 yrs and worked fine then. Projector ID is 1, and don't know what the remote is set at.
And I did not take the manual.
Does anyone know what might be causing this or am I missing a step from the 500. Any input much appreciated.
Thanks

THat's usually a bad SMPS. Take out the convergence tray and the EHT board, that can also keep the set from powering up, but if that's not it, then the SMPS went bad in storage. I can repair it for cheap.

Guys,
Thank you both!
Curt:
I will determine which one has failed, and let you know so you can let me know how much it costs to fix. In the meantime, I will replace the failed EHT or SMPS with one from the BG500 while I wait on the part being repaired and so I can get the BG800 up and running.
Thanks again!
Rob

So... what if it were both boards?
Switching the SMPS got the projector to turn on without going into standby mode. But that was almost it. Even though there were no errors reported on any of the LEDs, there was also no image - including the Barco logo screen. Switching the EHT assy also got the machine up and running fine.
Checked fuses on both assemblies, and all fuses passed continuity check. Checked the solder joints for signs of issues... none (while oddly solder joints on the BG500's SMPS look like they could use some work).
So... next question would be for Curt... how much to fix both?
Thanks,
Rob

Oh, other than that, on all three tubes:
no tube wear noticeable, no image burn (which I was dreading finding, as this was pulled from a Verizon building, and I figured it displayed one of their network maps or such) crisp picture, no lense scuffing, blindingly bright with brightness and contrast set at midpoint...
...and the machine is clean inside and out... which is interesting... considering the projector reports 10,398 hours... I wonder if the tubes and other components have been replaced - or maybe it sat on doing nothing for many hours?
Found the bad solder joint on the SMPS board... resistor at the top edge of the board (R121)... so I will reflow all the solder points on this thingy and see how that goes...
So, I think that one is taken care of.
That just leaves the EHT Board. The original in the BG800 was the 761742 board. The BG500 had the 761742.5 board. Curt, you up for fixing/upgrading it?
Thanks,
Rob

It could still be the SMPS. Sure, can repair the EHT board, but I'd send the SMPS in at the same time...just in case. Shoot me an email to curtpalme@shaw.ca.
Thanks!

Well, the projector is working for now with the boards from the BG500... and the screen is up. Mounted the projector as close to the distance "recommended" by the Lens utility, and apparently the screen needed to be closer (what's funny is I eyed the BG500's setup and got it almost dead on all those years back - virtual midpoints on everything related).
On top of that, the deck we mounted to is quite crooked - not something we expected as it is a year old - and not something we checked for. We thought we had enough adjustments on the mounting bolts connected to the PJ frame... ooops... wrong. Tomorrow, we are levelling the PJ so the image fits the screen, then swiveling it a little to the right (the PJ frame is swiveled somewhat - it's the whole big adjustable doodad).
Anyway, here's a couple images... (from my crappy cell phone camera... sorry, I know the cam sucks... better ones when we are done).
And thanks to everyone who has helped with info, advice and tips!!!

17' x 12.75' (4:3) - plus a few inches on each side for the grommet holes and eventual black masking.
or
21.25' Diagonal
We have yet to mask the edges, and we put up the frame and got it straight... then pulled out the frame (it goes into 3 pipe holes in the ground) to mount the screen on it. Put it back in and must have kicked dirt or something in a hole - so it's not quite perfectly level. Fixing that today.

Here's a daytime pic of the screen. Built using 2" PVC (we wanted 3" but it woulda cost over twice as much) and blackout fabric (the lady who sewed it for us pinched the fabric a little on the seam, but oh well - decent enough for an xBox/movie night for the 4th).

Hope you live in a very dark neighborhood. That's a huge screen for an 800 lumen pj to shine on. When you are done with it ship it to me for my birthday party!

LoL... fortunately, we do. The screen is surrounded by trees on 3 sides (you can see the opening on the 4th in the pic. It's not a big opening), and woods behind. The moon is generally behind the house with the ambient spill from it blocked by the trees and 3 stories of house. Heck, even in mid-day, when that pic was taken, you can see how much light is already being cut off the screen from the trees and house (especially compared to the deck).
Even projecting through the bug screening (which from what testing I did, is cutting half the light) the PJ was very bright last night except for one hot spot from a neighbor's side porch light - which usually isn't on, and will be off tonight at the least.
If by some miracle, I get it focused and running in time for tonight, I will take a pic with a better camera.

That's actually pretty cool, though I can't even imagine my 808 on a screen that big... I drive it reasonably on an 84" wide screen, and while it's pretty damn bright, I can't imagine it being anything but awful under your circumstances. What contrast did you have it set to?

At midpoint, it was pretty bright. Sadly, the BG500 SMPS board finally flaked out (something I had been expecting for years)... so I resoldered the BG800's SMPS board and put it back in the BG800. After that, all went well (and I have to either resolder the BG500's, or send it to Curt with the EHT board from the BG800)... but it meant I had a lot less time to finish adjusting this thing.
So... the image is kinda not really converged - and to me, looked crappy everywhere but the few places I managed to do a decent convergence on. Funny thing is many people thought it was the best image they had ever seen when watching movies at home on anything - and most of them have nice, large HD sets.
Attached is a terrible cell phone cam pic. I had some friends with a real camera take some better ones. Will post those once I get them.
This pic, btw, was taken before we cut the piece of porch/bug screen away from in front of the lenses - doing so made the picture twice as bright (any of you who have done film lighting know exactly what a piece of screen in front of a light source does (ie: scrim, net, etc) - this was a thick, heavy duty, small weave screen).
And of course, as indicated elsewhere (by the idiot me - who messed up), I screwed up when I placed the screen. I used the diagonal size from the lense program to calculate the distance at 1.3 - I should have used the width. So, it is a little dimmer still than it should be, as instead of being 29' from the PJ, it should have been 22'
Ah well... something to fix before our next outing.

Oh - all of this was with our porch lights on - three total; you can notice them lighting up the deck railing in the pic above. The thing still made the screen bright enough that most people didnt even notice (most being everyone but me). Eventually we turned the porch lights off - until someone really drunk tripped over a flat piece of patio... ah well...
