I am posting this just in case somebody saw a similar problem... We have a Pioneer Elite BDP09 blu ray player, HDMI output connected to an HDFURY2 putting out RGB into an AMPRO 4600 projector... 1080i and 1080p work beautifully; however, when choosing the "native" 1080/24p rate on the blu ray player with a blu ray film disc, the image just won't sync vertically, plus the image is compressed horizontally... AMPRO expert says the projector should accept 1080/24p just fine... Defective player? Problem with the HDFury2? Any ideas, anyone?

Hi! You emailed our support about this and I responded there already, but for sake of completeness:
No CRT projector can accept a 24p (24Hz) signal. The refresh rate is simply too low. Even if it could it would flicker so much to unacceptable. Many even find doubling it to 48Hz with a video processor is too flickery. Three times (72Hz) is better but very few CRT projectors can handle 1080p/72Hz.
Run your Blu-ray player at 60Hz. Not 24p/24Hz.
I'm afraid your Ampro expert's not much of an expert if he thinks that an Ampro CRT projector (or any CRT projector) can do 24Hz!

Thanks for the response, Kal. But I am still a bit unclear: What exactly isthe lowest rate at which the 4600 can sync? When you display 1080i or even 480i, which rate do they use? Is it 60 Hz? 30 Hz? Thanks again for the help! E. Zeiger |
In North America and other NTSC countries, 60Hz is typically used. In PAL countries 50Hz is used.
Resolution has nothing to do with refresh rate. If you're in North America then 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p in 99% of source devices will use 60Hz. Most Blu-ray players will have an option to use the native 24Hz recording on the disc. CRT projectors cannot sync to 24Hz.
One your CRT projector (and all CRT displays) you typically want to stick to 60Hz (or 50Hz).
If you use an HDfury2 and have a Blu-ray player that look at the capabilities of the display and 'automatically' sets the resolution/refresh rate, then the player will use 1080p/24 since the HDfury2 can do that. I apologize for the multiple threads. I am under time pressure to resolve this issue, and -not being familiar with the various fora- I asked my question on two different ones, not knowing which was more appropriate. I discovered your support email later. (I was unaware that asking questions simultaneously risked a somewhat-caustic response from the fora administrator ' ')

Kal certainly didn't mean to come off as caustic. I tend to close two threads about the same thing too. It just makes responses that much easier to follow. No need to apologize. We all have stresses.
