Picked up a free PC from the office. It is an Optiplex 320. I haven't booted it up yet and already have a few plans for it...any thoughts from the peanut gallery?

Options:

Windows Home Server
FreeNAS
Backup Desktop in basement (for wifes use)
Upgrade for basic video editing and photo stuff

It seems like it has quite a bit of potential. It is a socket T I believe but not sure if there is a limit to what I can throw in it.

Haven't booted it up yet. I think it has on board ATi graphics (x300 or 1100) 512mb ram, Pentium D processor, small HDD, etc.

I will get it up tomorrow.

Find another projector, run your stereo through the computer, and project winamp visualizations on your living room ceiling?

Then get some of the other BC special, you know the other product BC produces besides referbed CRT projectors.

It is a socket 775...I dont see why I cant spend $10 and drop a E5200 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116072) in it and throw a vid card (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127417) in it and get a decent HD accelerated editing machine. Sure it won't blaze but it isnt a slouch either.

Integrated Radeon 1100 express graphics.

Has PCIe x16 slot.

Tried playing a MKV of quantum of solace and it will place but it skips. CPU is only at 60% but one core is maxed out. I am going to throw in another gig of memory to see if that helps anything.

With a fresh install and using Chrome...this thing is lightening fast. I wonder how long it will take to get bogged down.

Well I thought I was going to be pretty slick and just throw in the free 1gig DDR2 PC-5300 from my MIL computer I upgraded to 4gig but it won't recognize it. The existing 1gig stick is only PC-4200 so maybe that is the issue?

I figured it would recognize both sticks but just run both at the lower speed. Now I can't even get CPUID to recognize the original RAM's characteristics...it just says 1024 MB.

I will swap the positions to see if that helps.

Swapped positions and now it works. Have 2 gig RAM now. Still won't play MKV...but I am thinking a $35 ATI card will fix that. Might just try that out first and see what happens.

The spec sheet lists...

Quote:
PCI Express 1.0aPCI Express x16: 80 Gbps

Soooo...what happens if I throw this vid card in there?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131084

It is PCI Express 2.0.

Or I suppose I could just get this thing and be done with it?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102800

It is PCI Express 1.0 and has H.264 HW decoding built-in.

Thoughts?

Is it ok to run a version 2.0 PCI Express x16 card in a version 1.0 slot?
