Gooday,
I have just joined the forum to find information on the use and setup of a NEC CRT.
I do so now with a heavy heart as only this evening the NEC emitted a very loud bang and died.
So today I have a few very different questions than the ones I was planning to ask yesterday.
Firstly, Is it worth getting someone to fix it and secondly, how do you get the smoke back in the wires???

If I were you I'd give Curt a call or shoot him an email. I'm sure he'll be honest with you about the unit, maybe you can send a few components in for testing or replacement. Welcome to the forum!

Should be an easy fix. What model of NEC do you have?

Curt, it's a PG6+ (PG6200?). (It's my crt which I lent to Waricle to have a tinker with).
Waricle, you tried to play that Kylie Minogue concert dvd through it didn't you. Sorry mate, I should have warned you about.

Usually the smell of burnt silicone will last a long time. I'll bet something in the power supply smoked. Take it out, pop open the cover, and see what blew. Post a pix, or let us know what you see. I've got spare power supplies, but shipping will be $100+ due to the weight. If the AC input board blew (likely), then I could just send that, which would make shipping a lot cheaper.

Gooday SweetChuck I am in Ningi near Bribie Island.
Curt, I will take the power supply cover off and have a look.
Are there any nasty residual currents I should be aware of?
Will past pics when I do.
Thanks gents,
Waricle

Oh, Mark is right, you're on 220 volts. What was I thinking? Mark might be able to repair it or have parts, otherwise I can repair it.
No, no residual voltage after it's been unpluged for 30 minutes.
Cheers!

LOL, wrong powersupply.
That's not damaged, that dirty soot is normal around the HV supply.
The supply you want to look inside is under the lenses.
Oh, and Curt, I have no PG parts at all.
I only have my spare set (much travelled) of XG-1101LC boards. Nothing else.
Oh Oh, and Curt, it's 240v here, but NEC just made a generic 220v supply which runs fine on 240v.

Thanks Mark,
I will look there.
Would a 240V - 110V transformer work?

Yes, but it needs to be a very big one.
Actually, it's not that hard to convert a 110v input board to 220v - at least in an Xtra. Couple of jumpers and a fuse. The board has the jumpers marked. Not sure if a Plus is the same, but I suspect it is.

More links than jumpers - you have to de-solder them.

I suppose the next question is there someone local to Brisbane who will look at the PJ and also how much will a power supply cost from Curt.

Welcome to the forum. Sorry about your luck. Great little projectors. Love my 9PG+. Should be lots of parts around. NEC's seem to be pretty common in Australia. See if you can grab a dead chassis somewhere. Might have a good power supply in it. Never hurts to look.
There's this thread in buy and sell... http://www.curtpalme.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=196581#196581
Someone is parting out a PG6200... I'm not sure of the compatibility of the Xtra vs. the PG+ though. Not sure how many parts are interchangeable. I'd go with Curt though. Great guy, great service. Even got to meet him recently .

Waricle, did you get this PG sorted out yet? There was quite a few 6 PGs on ebay in Australia last year.
Im not far from you, maybe about 35-40 minutes north.
