How scratched up can a lens be before it affects the image?

Just wondering how scratched up a lens can be on the face, before the image is affected?

Thanks

You can slap a 2x2" sticky note onto a lens and you won't notice much difference except that color gets dimmer. Minor scratches are absolutely undetectable, except they might cause a very minor loss of ANSI contrast due to diffracted light.

I once had an NEC which appeared to have been dragged by the lenses across a painted floor of some kind. There were GOUGES in the lenses, filled with paint, about as wide as my thumb. I couldn't tell there was anything wrong with the lenses when viewing the image on screen, however, I did chip the paint out of the gouges first...needless to say, imperfections on the outer lens need to be pretty darn severe for you to notice them in the projected image...
