I finally managed to get th LG GGC H20L to work on sata port, not sure what i did, but progress is better than nothing.

what i am getting is that powerdvd seems to stop responding or hangs when the blu ray starts to run a little way thru.

can anybody help me on this issue or had the same happen to them.

Did you download the latest video, audio drivers and apply all the patches from Cyberlink (PowerDVD)?

I had that for ages. It was an incompatibility with the SATA controler.

Did you do a search on that drive? There's lots of stuff here.

i dont know how i got it to work more with sata controler.
i went to the Asus website and downloaded the latest chipset, which might have helped.
i also went back to using the software that came with the drive, as Powerdvd 8 and 9 wouldnt work.

i am not sure about the latest patches from cyberlink where would i find them on their website and which ones should i download.

it is all compliant.
i am able to watch the blu ray but only using the IDE port.
the BD advisor says that all my hardware is ok to run blu ray.

It really sounds compliant issue, I got similar stops after disc insert with non compliant lcd monitor connected.

BD advisor might be fooled, because some 8600 are and some aren't hdcp compliant.
It seems yours Asus Nvidia 8600 gt is not compliant.

So you had anydvd installed when you get it working with IDE and now it's not installed?

If so, then it's confirmed. You need new video card or anydvd.

I have it connected to sata port and i can get it running for a while but then Powerdvd stops responding for a while and may start again.

i checked bd adviser- thats the latest one #2 and it says that graphic card and everything is compliant.

i can get it going for a while as i said even without Anydvd.

i found that by using the existing software that came with the drive it would respond more than say Powerdvd 8 or 9.
so i am in the process of taking ouot all other playback software, which does improve playback, but i have tried to take out nero several times and it wont uninstall.

i will let you know of my progress, because initially it wouldnt play at all on sata but now it does and i believe if i can free up some cpu usage i may be able to get it to play completely.

It would have been nice if these BR drives came in IDE. Far fewer problems.

well i have just tried the blu ray player with a normal dvd and again Powerdvd 7.3.xx stops responding and hangs and i believe this to be the cause of why my blu ray discs and other discs dont play properly.

also it stops responding even when there is no discs in the drive.

does anybody know of a more reliable software.
i went back to this software because it seemed to work on sata, but the problem of the software not responding causes the discs to stop playing.

i have tried windvd 9 + blu ray
powerdvd 8 & 9

if anybody has any further knowledge of software please let me know.

I would say the exact opposite.

In my experience, Sata just works. Not friggin with jumpers, no fat annoying cables.

IDE is on it's last legs (like PCI).

I agree with Mark, IDE is DeadsVille...SATA rocks. I don't understand what's going on with your system, I just put together a el-cheapo HTPC with the following parts.

The build went together easy and works perfect. Under $500

Motherboard:

Low Power 65W CPU:

Hard Drive:

Memory:

LG Combo Drive:

Vista Home Premium:

Very decent for the money (Quiet) HTPC Case:

Add the optional Gyration Remote and RF Keyboard: And still under $600

Is it a clean load of the OS, and what OS? It's probably a combination of hardware and software issues. PDVD is very picky and HDCP on older video cards are somewhat flakey as Ile pointed out. My point in posting my hardware was to point out it can work fine with the the right system. BTW are you trying to play BR or HD-DVD and does it play DVD's OK? I have noticed in the later patches for PDVD 7.3 HD-DVD support suckes or doesn't really exist, last time I tried playing one it didn't work well.

it is a clean install and os.

i have Vista Ultimate 64bit.

i am trying to play blu ray, with Pdvd 7.3.xx it will start to play , but when the software stops responding so does the disc, obviously.

the same happened with the dvd it wont play if the software hangs.

i am after good reliable software.
i have tried later versions of PDvd but they wont work,
tried winDvd 9 + blu ray and no go...

heres my system info:
OS: vista ultimate 64bit
ram: 4gb
power: 550w
graphics card: Asus Nvidia 8600gt(hdcp compliant)
driver: LG GGC H20L

any advice will be well appreciated.

Interesting...I'm using 32 Bit Vista...Perhaps that could be the difference? I didn't want to open up the 64 Bit can of worms yet.

SATA's standard was for the hard drives. Aparently from the guys I've talked to there were ( are? ) alot of compatibility issues with the optical drives on SATA.

I agree IDE is going away. It would have been nice to have the choice however.

And c'mon Mark, jumpers and fat cables? Are you that lazy? Wink

I think you are right about older SATA devices/interfaces...They were flakey. Then newer stuff, less then a year old just works.

as requested by cyberlink i have sent them, the 'dxdiag file, the bd advisor file and a screen shot of the problem' i hope they can fix this, as i did try Nero 8 HD and got the same problem.

make you wonder.
i know its not the drive as that works fine reading and writing data.
so it can only be the software to play blu rays.
