That is funny pretty. I know exactly what you are saying. I think Modding and tweaking is half the hobby so go for it. I was trying to emphasis that you need a good baseline to start if you really want to see how effective a mod is .

A good calibration should be on the list before mods, Buy your own equipment and learn how to use it, it's not that hard!! ( that is if you are not the village idiot ) Wink

I have re-initialized the 9500 4 times so far it takes me 30 minutes to get a decent picture on it. I am still not happy with it picture wise so I am thinking the boards are tired. The picture hasn't changed much since the first time Phishin ca helped me so I ain't doing all that bad. No I am not even close to thinking I got it, but I have a fair grasp of it.

. Very Happy

You are doing just fine. It will get to a point where it's running nicely and you'll absolutely love it. I spent a few hours a week for the better part of a *year* messing around with my NEC PG+ and that thing compared to the Marquee is a nightmare to set up. Still, I'm REALLY glad it was my first projector. It was tough, but I learned a whole bunch asking stupid questions and getting answers from the patient people on the forum. I'd like to think I've even helped a few new NEC users since it was such a trial for me to start with.

Give it some time. You feel dumb because most guys on here have had a few projectors or worked on several projectors over years. You are like a month in and you have started fiddling around, GREAT!

I do think you should hold off on the modifycations for a bit and try to get a decent picture out of that beast. It might be the setup, it might be a bad board or something simple like a connector. It could be many things that's preventing you from getting a good image right now. In my opinion, lets get that sorted out first. If you end up with a nice image, you might find that it's as far as you want to take tweaking it. Once it's running right and set up properly it might simply be "good enough".

If you wouldn't mind, please take a few screen shots, posting them and telling us what you aren't happy with, guys can start helping you out with the setup. There's a reasonably good chance there is one step or adjustment you are missing. I have the worst point and click camera's and they have been adequate enough to show my issue and get help. The Marquee is way brighter too, so you should be able to get a good shot with some light in the room. We just need to see what you aren't happy with, so we can recommend things to try. Let us know! Thumbs Up

Well slap my fanny and call me Mary. I got so pissed I re-set the 9500 again. Started from scratch did the whole megillah but this time something Nashou said struck me.

doing the visual grey scale set up from Tim's site should come as second nature.

That set me to thinking and did just that, read Tim's Grey scale set-up and, wait oh my god, FOLLOWED THE INSTRUCTIONS THERE and bam a real honest to goodness picture worth watching.

Before the G-2 and drive were all at 50 across the board.

It's still not where I want it but it now looks better than ever before. Whites are still a little dirty looking, the red blooms some, and the blue is still not scheimfluged ,ahh, flapped right but it is watchable.

Have you ever assembled a BBQ and had parts left over that sit on a shelf for the next 10 years and when you get rid of the BBQ you put them out with it just in case the guy that grabs it off the curb can figure out where they were susposed to go? Laughing

No, but I do know what you mean. I have lots of plastic bags full of nuts, bolts, brackets, and dohickies that kinda looked important, from putting things together from Christmas' past.

Well last Night I watched the Changeling with Angelina Jolie and John Malkovich. If anyone has seen this you know it is a very dark movie shot with a lot of half lighting of faces and backgrounds. It was so dark I thought the 9500 was just not set up right to watch it. I turn of the 9500 switched back to my Mitsubishi RPTV and watched the movie on it instead.

Now here is the surprise part the pictures were almost identical. Mr. Green

So close I could not believe it. The 9500 is so close to being right at this point it just needs some slight tweaking to be spot on.

So I thought. Sad

I turned on the 9500 this morning waited 30 minutes to warm up and went to watch the Changeling again. I noticed a blue bloom around the menu on the screen, so I checked the convergence and the blue is off again. Remember I had a problem with the blue neck board discussed in other posts.

So where does that leave Draganm's mods at on the list of things to do?

I am thinking that Draganm's mods may just be kind of like a tune up for the 9500. Actually more like a repair than a mod a this point the 9500 works fine it just keeps losing convergence.

did any of the other colors drift or just the blue? Make sure you tightened the LC housing down tight so the tube's and lenses dont shift either.

Thanks Nashou, I just checked that and I'm glad to say it wasn't that. I'd would have had to get myself a Jester hat. Laughing

Blue mostly some small red too.

It's not an either or thing.

It doesn't make ANY sense at all to do something like high end MP mods if you don't even bother going your greyscale properly (EyeOne/CalMAN). A properly greyscale calibrated/setup stock projector will blow away any hot rodded mod'ed projector IMHO because frankly, I wouldn't be able to get over how crappy the colours are if it's not calibrated.

Kal thank you for your response. I already have the MP Mods on this 9500.

I am really surprised how few people have said what you just said. I thought it would a slam dunk for the EyeOne but it hasn't been.

So far It only has one vote.

And that was before your post. Surprised

I intend to do just that. But Let's just ASSUME that I did everything right, what else could cause the drift?

It's a waste of time to consider the grayscale equipment before you get the projector tight. All the magnetics have to be done prior to even considering spending the time to grayscale with test equipment. Slight adjustments to the magnetics will alter it's output, espcially blue

O.K. The Magnetics require me to remove the shield over top of each tube and twist the coils surrounding the tube near the back end of tube? I am hesitant to do this not because of hurting something but the picture was really really good except for being slightly darker than i'd like but I do it if that is what needs to be done.

At great risk to myself here, are there any pictures of this being done?
