Wow, I was sure I read that wrong but I guess it was right the first time, $10K for a Marquee 8110. Shocked I think this might in fact be the biggest scam ever in a local transaction where a PJ was actually delivered and installed (not including some sucker sending Western Union to Nigeria).
I just don't understand how someone could do this? I mean even if you charged $5K for an installed 8110 5 years ago it still would have been a very heavy mark-up. To outright defraud the guy and double your already fat profit is just mind-boggling.
Spanky just send the original buyer here, let him do justice upon the evil doer with public shame and warning to others.

Spill it. We wanna know, and yes, no one else should be victim of a scammer. If a seller doesn't know what they have, then they should either do the research, or simply post that they don't know much about the unit.

No, I thought there might be a slim chance the seller didn't see the pj and was just a middle man. He knew exactly what he had when he sold it to the owner. If you are talking about the owner, then he was just trying to get unload it. They thought they were sold a 9501 and had no reason to believe that they didn't receive one.

As for outing him, the owner pleaded with me not to out him. He seemed genuinely concerned about hurting this guys livelihood.

Yeah, I have never heard about anything this big before. I am sure it may have happened in the past or at least been tried.

As for the owner, I think they are pretty much done with the situation. It has been a couple of weeks and I haven't heard from him since.

That's like the person who won't give up her boyfriend because she loves him. Then when hes beating up some other woman she still won't come forward because "he didn't mean to do it".

How will you feel when the guy scams someone else.

Who's to say this guy hasn't been DOING this all along ?

Protect the identity of a thief so he can keep thieving and not disrupt his "livelihood", what a novel idea...

Two words came to mind when I read that:

fraud (frôd)
n. A deception deliberately practiced in order to secure unfair or unlawful gain.

ac·com·plice (ə-kŏm'plĭs)
n. An associate in wrongdoing, especially one who aids or abets another in a criminal act, either as a principal or an accessory.

Apparently, the seller's livelihood is fraud... That owner should be ASHAMED of himself for trying to protect the identity of somebody misrepresenting merchandise... a clear act of fraud. Somebody is full of sh*t, here... If it isn't the owner, then it's the seller... If the owner won't reveal the seller's identity, then maybe it's both.

The seller is worried about protecting the reputation of a vendor that padded his bill by 5000$????
I don't know anyone that rich and stupid. Even if the installer was a blood relative- nobody walks away from that kind of money, forgives the guy, and then protects him so that he can stay in business. I don't buy it, these guys are running a scam.

TV/Projector: All of them!

Just playing devil's advocate here for a sec. Was it $10K for the projector... or $10K for the projector, scaler, screen, installation and calibration? If all of the above, then maybe, just maybe it could have hit $10K.

If however, the set was sold as a 9501LC for $10K, well, then the seller should be outed.

The original seller claimed this was a 9501LC and sold it to the present owners for $10,000.

The OP went to look at this projector, KNEW it wasn't a 9501LC and told the present owners that.

The original seller apparently had offered the present owners $800. to buy the projector back from them when they purchased yet ANOTHER projector from him...

The original seller committed fraud against the present owners, no matter WHAT was included in the original sale.

When you claim something you sell is one thing, and its really another, that is , pretty much the exact definition of fraud.

You all seem to accept the original buyer's story without a questioning attitude.

To me - reading above, I sense his portrayal of the situation was possibly not all accurate. Therefore, the buyer wanted to avoid exposing the particulars, which could challenge some of his story (perhaps as opposed to worries about demeaning the seller's actions)

I actually gave the seller the benefit of the doubt and figured he may not have known it wasn't a 9501. He then said that the pj had some problems, so he converted it.

This line from the OP's original post exposing this fraud seems to me to indicate that he spoke directly with the original seller, which means to me, the original owners story is accurate.

There is no reason to protect a fraud artists identity.

Today's world is fascinated by "identity theft" and believes the solution is to hide your identity, which is the EXACT situation where criminals most easily flourish. How can you stop this situation when no one knows who anyone is ?

Elaine is not my real name, nor am I female, I just like the show Seinfeld a lot and there are so few(ie. NONE) women who frequent tech forums I thought it would be a nice change. I'm not worried about my identity being stolen, nor am I *trying* to keep it a secret.

You make a good point though, it is ubiquitous on the internet...
