Though my lowly theater can't compare to most of the big dogs here I can maybe add something, coming from the perspective of gradually obtaining equipment as I could. I can almost guarantee you will get upgrade-itis. It is practically inevitable.
When you know what your pj can do and you know you aren't feeding it the best you can you sit there thinking of what you "wish" you had done... Not all upscaling players are created equal. I have 3 that upscale. The first was just a cheapo rca dvr that I got for my husband when they first came out. Then I have a Toshiba HD and a Samsung Bluray. I had not used the Toshiba sice getting the samsung since they both upscale and at the time I didn't have a switch so it was just easier to throw a SD in the samsung rather than switch cables. Now that I have a working (yipee) HDMI switch I fired up the toshiba again and I can say its upscaling blows the samsung away, even so, the blueray even output at 1080i with a bluray disk still puts out a better picture than the same movie on an sd disk upscaled through the toshiba. If you are willing to spend the money for a player that upscales WELL, you are within the price range of a decent blueray player which will do both. I just see it as a no brainer when it comes to the best bang for the buck.
You may be satisfied at first (I was... I've always been left with my tongue on the floor after every upgrade I have made saying sheesh, I should have done this ages ago...) but when the new wears off and you start to sit and scrutinize things I will bet the bug will bite you... If I'd had the money to do it all at once - would have. In the end I know I spent more by buying what I could make due with at the time and upgrade later. If you are basing your decision on "principal" rather than price, I'd rethink it and consider the bluray. Its going to do everything a lesser player could do and will not be lacking when the upgrade bug hits.

Bluray is here, it's a viable media, it will scale DVD's to HD for you and the players are fairly well made if you go with a brand name.

Over the air will do 1080i, it's still 1920x1080 just 30 fields per second. Also there is satelite that is broadcasting 1080p so it's available. 720p isn't the highest. |
Thanks AR. Bluray is here for now, but there has been some question over whether it will last. The same thing happened with Beta vs. VHS. Beta was better but VHS won out. I've heard good things about the Denon 5910 and that was the way I was planning to go as far as players are concerned. It does a good job of upscaling and is well built. Parts are still available too. |
Any dvd player upscaling will not look as good as a blu-ray. I have an upscaling dvd player [Integra 10.5] it can not upscale 1080p only 1080i. But my Sony bd550 down rezzing blu- ray to 1080i looks a whole lot better than the upscaled images the integra puts out by a large margin. Also the sony players upscaling of regular DVD's is better too. So unless your inheriting a DVD player I would buy a blu-ray.They are just that damn good. |

Thanks Lori, (love the hemi) Yeah I know all about upgraditis. Its also true that you're better off to buy later with a solid equipment choice that'll do it for you than to buy some cheapie junk that work like crap and die in 6 months. I am pretty particular about my gear and look for good design and reliability even if it's unconventional. For example; Paul W.Klipsch was a great man in the speaker industry. He was a bit unconventional to say the least and some of his designs are still produced today. The Klipschorn is an excellent example. A horn loaded design that uses the corners of the room for bass enhancement and very efficient to boot at 104db!! You can drive those guys with a toaster, well almost. I still prefer 2 channel stereo over 5 channel and up. I hate poorly designed cheaply made junk as you just wind up tossing it at least I do and I think it's a waste of money to keep buying crap when you could just buy a good unit to begin with. I do see a logic about using the Bluray player to run all video content. I guess I haven't hit the wall on this one yet as I have more reading to do and then to go and see some good examples on screen.
