How hot is too HOT?

That is hot, but like you have noticed, the NEC uses the case as a heatsink. Taking a temp reading right there on the case is kind of like taking a reading on an actual heatsink. A lot of projectors run this hot on the heatsinks, though cooling more is never a bad idea... especially on an NEC which seems to have been designed to act as kindling for your home theater Wink

Back when I had Xtra's, I did these things to keep them cool:

1. Extra Heatsink on base opposite STKs, with fan.

2. Extra fans on Deflection heatsink (thin Athlon cooler fans fit).

3. Turn around rear fan near Blue Neckboard...it's blowing the wrong way.

4. Extraction fan above PJ in roof.


With these mods the Xtra is basically the pick of the 8" air coupled projectors. I wouldn't swap one for an XG, or a Barco, or a Marquee (never seen one though, but the AC ones have crap lenses). Only an LC is better.

The other thing that must be done is the 47uf Cap on the front of the def board must be changed to a 470uf cap...to fix the buzz.
