|
|
I posted this over at AVSForum, but I'd like to hear from the experts here maybe even more.
I picked up a 2nd Runco DTV-1200 (Barco Cine9) this week. My intentions were to buy this as a backup unit, to use for spare parts for my primary DTV-1200 to keep it running for a few years. But, after firing up the new one, I find it is easily the equal of my primary unit. Now, what to do?
I think I'm going to do a stack of Cine9's! My wife will think I'm absolutely nuts (again), but what the heck. I can distribute hours between the two, and get the increased brightness when I need it with the stack. Then, if Lumagen provides the blend feature that they have talked about for the RadianceXE, I might try a blend.
Another alternative would be to create a primary unit with the best boards of the two. The unit I just bought is a 2004 unit, while my primary unit is a 2001. Resolution at 1080p seems to be very slightly better with the 2004 unit.
I think the stack is a better idea.
What would you do in my circumstances?

Wait for Athanasios to get his blend 100% then get him to help...

There is only one reason to blend IMO, and that if you want to do a 2.35/2.40 screen and you want it to me large.......really large.

If the blending hardware wasn't so expensive,I'd definately go 2.35 and have a 12 ft wide AT scope personally. Then again when you consider what a good lens scaler coststo do it with a digital pj,maybe it's not so prohibitive.

Get 1 Blendzilla (Diventix DVX-8022), blend on an SmX 12 foot wide 2.35:1 AT screen, and never leave the HT.

TBH,if money was not an issue, that's where I'd be.Unfortunately even though I could afford the blendzilla,I'm cheap and am hoping for an easy HTPC solution to come along.
I do envy the guys with the blended 2.35 crt setups though, apart from the lack of hygiene from never leaving the theatre

Wow you used "easy" and "HTPC" in the same sentence.

Yeah, that's what i hear. stacking effectively doubles your contrast ratio and saves your tubes from wear because you can set your contrast and brightness much lower on the machines when they work together.

Then stacking looks great to me. Brighter and better contrast or just as bright and longer tube life.......

In setting up my 2 Cine9's in a stack setup (which I haven't accomplished to my satisfaction yet) I have developed an extreme admiration for those who have the patience and time (and ability) to try to accomplish this.
I have two very-well performing Cine9's but they are different in many ways: geometry, focus, size, linearity, etc., but when you have a stack everything must match to the T. Each puts up a fantastic image by itself and would satisfy the most critical viewer; put them together and the differences stare you right in the face. I'm a novice in this and it will take me many hours to get this stack close enough to make some screen shots and decide if i want to proceed to a permanent stack, or not. Right now, I'm leaning towards not having a stack due to the physical limitations of my room and the limitations of a 68 yr old retiree. I can tolerate a coffee table-mounted projector in my room for only so long. It occupies the prime viewing space and severely limits the usability of this room. Thus, it required ceiling mounting just like my other projector if I'm to have a stack. This is beyond my physical capabilities. I live in the woods in the mountains of north GA, and there's just me to do it. I love it this way, but it limits what I can undertake.
So, I will continue on this until I get a satisfactory-performing stack, take some screen shots, invite some friends over to see it, and then I will revert to one projector. My wife and I are perfectly satisfied with the performance of either of these projectors. One of them will just have to be stored to be used for tube replacements, board replacements, etc., through the lifetime of the pj's - or us, whichever comes first.
