Hi everyone,
After a relatively long process I've decided to go with crt projection. I've already posted over at AVS so I'll keep it simple. I looked at digital units and simply wasn't satisfied with the lack of build quality in the circuit boards and some of the cases etc. This led to a concern about support and parts availability, reliability etc. on DLP units. Yes they are portable and easy to install etc. but at the end of the day I don't like to be replacing a video unit after only 4-5 years. Crt has a very good track record and even if some units are past their prime they can be repaired. I believe crt can also be improved by adding or replacing older components with newer/better parts such as caps and resistors etc. The modular design very much appeals to me as well. The capability of crt to do inky blacks and produce a really great picture are also very appealing. I've decided on a Marquee 8500 as I believe they produce a really good picture and are still in production today. I'm glad to be a part of this incredible hobby even if I'm new to it.

welcome to the dark side! CRTs are addicting and you can never really switch back to the bulb side, so be careful. Smile

Thanks. I never did buy any digital unit as I was not satisfied with what I saw. I did have a crt rptv that was quite good. Besides I'm getting real stubborn as I get older.

I have seen some setups in home theater displays at some high end places like Commercial electronics and HiFi Centre in Vancouver, but not in someones home. I don't have a dedicated room, hell I don't even own the house. I'm living in a suite downstairs. It has a large Kitchen are that divides off to a large living room approx. 20x15. It has some windows and the typical light colored walls, white ceiling and beige carpets. I plan to black out the windows in the living room and close the shades in the daytime. As you may have guessed there is a lot of ambient light to deal with. There is only direct sunlight in the morning the rest of the day it is moderately lit with indirect light from outside.

Thanks for the welcome, and yes I plan to ask questions even when I read. I do much better at learning by demonstration and hands on so learning by reading is a slow process for me.

Remember that CRTs take a significant amount of setup effort. If you expect to be moving soon or frequently, you might want to reconsider. But if you expect to be in your current location for a while, you can make it work.

TV/Projector: Marquee 9501LC / NEC 9PG+

Welcome. Good pick for your first projector. Should be plenty bright for you too. They can be a bit of a pain to setup, but I've heard marquees are easier than most. Once you get it though it's easier to do again even if you do move. I've move my NEC 3 times (3 installs) and it was never much effort to get it back the way I like it.

I am building a couple of houses close to you. One in White Rock and one in Surrey, and they are both going to have 8500's in them. I am setting one of them up in a couple of weeks, When I come down I can show you how it looks And help you with yours if you need a hand .

Hi Gary,
Yes that's very true. I don't plan on moving any time soon so I should be good.

Thanks much Bruce. I am going to need all the help I can get. I would sure love to check out a real set-up. W/R works best for me as I don't get out too much. I would most certainly appreciate your help. Let me know if you want to call me and I'll give you my number. I'm not buying a unit immediately but I do plan to work with Curt to do the best I can with my situation. Thanks for your thoughts.

I HIGHLY recomment Curt, especially for your first projector. There's nothing like the piece of mind of a warranty on an older beasty.

If like me, you aren't super concerned about minty tubes, then the price goes down. He might have some "hint of wear" tubes and get you a nice working chassis. You can save up and get the "minty" tubes later... or convert it to a 9" lc unit. Wink

Ok. I thought you bought an 8500 already. I also second Curt, you cannot go wrong with the service and warranty. But If Curt is too busy to set it up for you I can give you a hand.

I only plan to buy one from Curt as I expect he will have done the mods to improve reliability etc. Peace of mind in this case is a beautiful projector image.

Bruce, sorry if I wasn't clear earlier. If I could I would still like to see a unit in one of your builds as it would give me a very good orientation as to how it goes together etc. I do most of my own work on everything I own as I have a mechanical background.
