A simple question: I want swap mec tubes (180dvb22) into Barco Graphics 808s (Sony tubes).
Must I swap the neckboards only or also other parts?
Thanks

Thanks | Actually you need just half of neck board, that half which have neck connector.
Those could be hard to find, so you probably need to buy three RG808s full neck boards that are also hart to find.
Neck board pinout mod is one option.
You need also different MEC tube attachment peaces to frame, from 808 or BD808s.

Thank you Ile
Yes I know the difference between neckboards, in fact actually I've a set of R762746 (120mhz native for Mec tube) and a set of R762721 modified.
Then ... which other parts I must change besides those that I have already written?
Nothing other? Only neckboards and tube's housings?
Thanks.

Sony and mec tubes have different shape, Sony faceplate are bit higher if I remember correct. So I'm not sure if mec tubes fit straight to Sonys housings.
If those mec tubes have original housings attached, then it would be easier to find 808 top and bottom frames for tubes. Least one of those two must be different.

As far as I know the MEC tubes will not fit in Sony housings.

mmmmhhh
Front side of the housing is the same because 808s and 808 have the same lenses (HD8).
Back side of the housing instead is different because Sony tubes have different faceplate and different screws positions.
So ... Mec tubes don't fit in Sony housings, correct!
Well ....
I would to know if I must swap some other boards .... SMPS, Quadrupler, splitter, EHT, etc.....
Thanks
Domenico

Domenico | Insulate those three unused spot supressor cable connectors from G2 board.
You can check heater voltage after swap, because Sony and mec have bit different heater resistances so voltage could chance little. Heater should be 6.3 V between 2 and 3 pins in neck boards J2 connector.
No need for other chances.

Ok I've found pins in the neckboard.
Where is voltage regulation?

| At smps main board. There should be blue adjustment pot, I think it was next to transformer.
Only s-series smps have this pot.

mmhhhh
So SMPS board is interchangeable between 808 <---> 808s
808= R7621705
808s= R7621706
Thanks

808s smps can be used in 808, but I still would check heater after chance and adjust it if needed.
808 smps in 808s can cause dim picture, heater could be too low with Sony tubes. Curt posted some mod to this few years a go...

http://archive2.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=608215&highlight=808+smps
"What happens if you drop a 7621705 power supply into a BG 808s set, the filament voltage drops from 6.3 volts to 5.1 volts. That causes super low brightness and it looks like the cathode emission is dead, common with those BG 808s sets with high hours on them."
"Bypassing a diode and a resistor on the 1705 gave it enough to bring that 5.1 volts up to 6.4 and the brightness came back."
Probably D211 and R204, not sure though.

Guys, you only need to modify the SMPS if you're putting a non BG808s supply into a BG808s, as the Sony tubes seem to draw more current from the SMPS, thus the drop in filament voltage. MEC tubes into a BG808s will work fine, just check the fil voltage and adjust if it's off.
You do need BG808/BD808 mounting frames for the tubes, as the MEC tubes will NOT fit the Sony frame. That's the tough part to find. Get a BD808/s and you lose the important Scheimpflug adjustments, and BG808 tube frames are hard to find. Why then not just find a cheap BG808 and retube?

The reason I am asking is that I am about to put 705 SMPS that I picked up from (Curt) into an 801s Frame with 9" Sony Tubes. Looks like D11 and R204 from the schematic is that right? Why do we have to bypass the diode?
I will check the voltages before any mod as this is a little surprising as the 705 SMPS is listed for the BG801s which has Sony tubes so it doesn't make sense that it would have the wrong filament voltage although there is not too much that would surprise me these days.
